The IETM Spring Plenary Meeting 2009 took place from 23 to 26 April 2009 in Bratislava…for the first time in Slovakia, for the first time in this remote and unexplored part of Europe…
Main topic of the meeting
IETM Bratislava was conceived in interaction with “2009: the European Year of Creativity and Innovation”. The question raised was: What culture without education? What education without culture? The link between culture and education seems obvious. But is it really so in practice?
Educational and cultural policies are rarely, if ever, created jointly. And it is not only about cultural education, it is also the value of culture and the arts in society, identity and the quality of life which could be built and enhanced by effective collaboration between the cultural and educational sectors.
Creating a society which understands the value of culture, which has abilities and knowledge to discern the quality of cultural goods and services, which nurtures and supports creativity and therefore increases the quality of everyday life for its citizens is a task for Europe in the 21st Century.
CONTENT SESSIONS
The different working sessions aimed to explore how education and culture impacts on artists, cultural managers, policy-makers and the public. From practical information sessions to lessons learned in difficult situations, to some hard questions directed at ourselves, the focus was to present the voices of artists, politicians and specialists who can interrogate and inspire our daily work producing and presenting contemporary performing arts.
ARTISTIC PROGRAMME
The artistic programme was constructed to introduce the situation of contemporary theatre and dance in Slovakia and point out its specificities, present productions significant in the context of Slovak theatre and interesting for an international public as well as to place Slovak performing arts in relation to other genres.

Divadelná Nitra Association (DNA)
The Divadelna Nitra Association is a non-governmental organisation whose main role is organising the Divadelna Nitra International Theatre Festival (known among the theatre professionals abroad as the Nitra Festival). The Association was founded in 1992 and celebrated its 15th anniversary in September 2006. Its mission is to create, by means of organising the annual Divadelná Nitra International Theatre Festival, an open space for the promotion of European performing arts and for international discussion on the questions of art, culture and cultural policy; to take the initiative in the field of critical reflection and exchange of information and know-how; to contribute to the dissemination of works of art and experts from the field of performing arts; to bring European performing arts and its values closer to the public; and to develop the public’s relationship with art. It concentrates strongly on the education of professionals – organising management and arts marketing training, seminars for theatre critics and regular international conferences on various topics of cultural policy (International Conference 2004 „Culture – Burden or Capital?“). The Association has good experience with organising various events and the Festival is becoming a much-sought-after place for international meetings (meeting of EFRP – European Festival Research Project led by Dragan Klaic in 2005, ENICPA meeting in 2006). The Association is a member of IETM.

Slovak National Theatre (SNT)
Founded in 1920 as the first professional theatre, Slovak National Theatre is the best representative institution of Slovak culture. Today it is made up of Drama, Opera and Ballet sections, each with its own permanent professional company, and with the Ministry of Culture as its founder. It works in several older venues in the city centre and in 2007 the new building on the banks of the Danube became its residency. The artists of SNT represent Slovak theatre on tours in Slovakia and abroad, where their opera soloists have achieved world acclaim. New management of SNT (since mid-2006) promises remarkable changes on an artistic, organisational and personal level as well as in the field of international relations.
Theatre Institute Bratislava (TI)
Established in 1961, the Theatre Institute is a state institution and has developed into a modern European institution which aims to offer comprehensive information services on theatre and performing arts to Slovak and foreign public. Activities and functions: scientific and researching activity, monitoring and assessment, publishing of theatrical literature and contemporary drama, documentation, organisation of exhibitions of theatrical artefacts (Documentation Collections; Archives; Library, Audiovisual and Multimedia Collections; Collections of Gallery and Museum Value) and organisation or co-organisation of cultural and educational events (symposiums, festivals etc.). The leading project is Nová drama / New Drama, which systematically introduces Slovak playwrights and theatre to audiences at home and abroad, and is also supported through the Festival Nová drama / New Drama.
Theatre Institute is member of IETM, ITI, ENICPA, SIBMAS, Culture Action Europe and IFTR.
Bratislava in Movement Association (BMA)
Non-governmental organisation working in the field of professional development of contemporary dance in Slovakia. The main activity of BMA is the international festival of contemporary dance called “Bratislava in Movement” which, in the last nine years, has played an important role in the development of this art genre in Slovakia. Besides the festival, “Bratislava in Movement” is active in the field of education by organising workshops, lectures and conferences with foreign experts for professional dancers and students of art schools. It has developed the basis of an information centre and started an active policy towards the development of dance criticism in Slovakia. BMA is a member of IETM and Aerowaves.
Culture Contact Point Slovakia
Cultural Contact Point Slovakia was set up by the Department of European Integration at the International Cooperation Section of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic and has been established as a coordination centre for the implementation of the Community framework programme entitled ”Culture 2000 programme” in support of culture. From the beginning of the year 2005 the CCP Slovakia is no longer a part of the Ministry of Culture, and instead works within the Theatre Institute in Bratislava.
