Liliom works at a fun fair, where he meets Julie. But he quarrels with the owner of the carrousel and loses his job. The two of them are left destitute. Julie knows that Liliom has nothing to offer her. But still she sticks by him. To get some money, he plans to rob a cash transport. A deed that has huge consequences, both for his future and for Julie’s.  

Liliom is about choices and what these can mean in a life. Do people at the bottom of society have the freedom to choose?
