Fortress Europe
At this Fortress Europe session, we aim to make a concrete list of recommendations for action to strengthen and deepen the involvement of arts organisations in relation to the issues of refugees in Europe and beyond.
The arrival and presence of refugees in Europe remains a critical issue. The policies of national and supranational governmental organizations are by and large ineffective and often hostile. Self-organizing grass-root initiatives of citizens in many different European cities and across countries have endeavoured to compensate for what the political ruling class is failing to do: to show solidarity and accommodate the inclusion of refugees in European societies. Arts organisations (an important sector of civil society) play an essential role in this regard.
