As IETM celebrates its 40th anniversary, we want to think back on what was passed on to us but also about what we are passing on to others and how. What should we be taking into account when we think about transmission in the arts? What would future generations want us to take into account?

A trio of speakers will make a joint reflection on the status of the sector of society, about the legacy we are building and about the modalities of our exchanges.

Speakers
Nele Hertling, Germany
Kylie Walters, CNSMD, France
György Ujvári-Pintér, Hodworks, Hungary

This session will be broadcasted and captioned with AI technology.

Want to connect with other online participants? Join us for a digital version of our long-missed Who's there? session!

We will host two online sessions to accommodate different time zones. This session will allow us to connect with our friends and colleagues in the Western part of the Globe. If you are attending on site in Lyon, feel free to join us online from your hotel room.

Participants will be randomly assigned to one-on-one breakout rooms where they will be able to introduce themselves and discover who else is in the e-room.

This is an opportunity to network in a spontaneous and informal IETM fashion and a moment to be together with those who are attending the online programme.

Performance in French without subtitles

“How can theatre, with its abridgements and clichés, be used to make something complex understandable?” – Adeline Rosenstein

Simultaneously a historical and aesthetic piece of research, Laboratoire Poison opens onto a vast site on which various resistance movements between 1943 and 1976 and their repression are depicted.

Is theatre capable of revealing certain shifts and weak points in various resistance movements, without actually damaging the sense of these struggles?

Adeline Rosenstein explores all the options of theatrical arts and tackles these questions head on to examine our need for glorious stories with honesty, humour and intelligence.

Live vs digital: the new old debate [West of the Globe]

Online

01:00 - 02:00 SGT | 02:00 - 03:00 JST/KST | 04:00 - 05:00 AEDT | 20:00 - 21:00 EET /MSK | 19:00 - 20:00 CEST | 18:00 - 19:00 GMT |  13:00 - 14:00 EST |  10:00 - 11:00 PST

The digital dimension is not alien to the performing arts – it has been developing and flourishing for decades. However, when the pandemic challenged the live component of our art form, the performing arts sector has been pushed to embrace digitalisation at an even more rapid pace.

For some, it has been an opportunity to renew their artistic form, reach out to new audiences, and enhance accessibility. For others, digitalisation has been merely a part of their survival strategy, a temporary solution going at odds with their aesthetics and artistic values. Is it not a high time to acknowledge and to get to grips with this difference, if not a clash, of perspectives and approaches?

This session is a moment to reflect upon some of the opportunities and contradictions that came to light in regard to the digitalisation of the performing arts.

Wo-Man — Amala Dianor

Maison de la Danse

Maison de la Danse

Address: 8 Av. Jean Mermoz, 69008 Lyon | Event Map | Venue accessibility

Wo-Man is the story of a beautiful encounter between dancer Nangaline Gomis and choreographer Amala Dianor, whom she asked to perform an extract from her solo Man Rec as part of her studies at the CNSMD in Lyon. The choreographer then reflected on the transmission of this solo created in 2014 and which has continued to tour on international stages ever since. Conceived as a dialogue between its multiple origins – from urban dances to contemporary dance – questioning the identity of the individual and their relationship to others, Man Rec is the founding piece of a hybrid and embodied writing which imposes its singularity in the landscape of contemporary dance.

Malacca — Christophe Gellon

Théâtre Astrée, Villeurbanne

Théâtre Astrée, Villeurbanne

Address: 6 Av. Gaston Berger, 69100 Villeurbanne | Event Map | Venue accessibility

A singular and ephemeral "one shot" creation at the initiative of Christophe Gellon, Malacca once again brings together choreographers and dancers for a unique performance. This year, Parisian artists Slate Keller Hemedi and the Brainstorm company are teaming up with the Voltaïk company for a seventh edition of urban, visual and colorful choreography.

Slate comes from the electro culture, born in clubbing evenings in the Paris region in the 2000s; a dance that combines footwork and arm play, to the rhythm of electro-house music.

Brainstorm is a company with a very visual universe, looking for intelligence and quality of movement. Originally from hip-hop and eager to break the codes, its choreographers put dance at the service of pure and simple inspiration.

Together, they transmit their repertoires to dancers from various backgrounds, mix their worlds and bring to the stage a powerful and lively Malacca.

Rêverie Carcasse – Léa Carton de Grammont

Théâtre des Clochards Célestes

Théâtre des Clochards Célestes

Address: 51 Rue des Tables Claudiennes, 69001 Lyon | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

"It goes up, it comes down. It goes up, it comes down. It takes its time. It goes up, it comes down. It breathes. It goes up, it comes down - without knowing that it exists, just breathing. It lasts like this. It breathes. As long as it exists, it breathes."

This is the story of a woman who tries to live in her body. And her body escapes her. Her body agitates her: it digests, it beats, it breathes. It spends its time becoming someone else: suddenly it is big, or pubescent, or old.

At the beginning of life, we do not distinguish between ourselves and the world. You think you are everything. Then you learn. You are IN something.

Rêverie Carcasse unfolds the relationship between a body and the person who inhabits it. In turn costume, puppet or animated landscape, the body is embodied in the material, to make existential questions sensitive: What is it to be a body? What else are we? And how can we recognise ourselves in it?

La Mère Coupable – Adaptation of Beaumarchais by Laurent Hatat et Thomas Piasecki

Théâtre La Renaissance

Théâtre La Renaissance

Address: 7 Rue Orsel, 69600 Oullins | Event Map | Venue accessibility

Performance in French without subtitles.

La Mère Coupable (EN: The Guilty Mother) or L'Autre Tartuffe (EN: The Other Tartuffe) is a drama in five acts completed in 1792. It is the third and final part of Figaro's trilogy, after The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro.

Twenty years after Figaro's famous wedding, in full revolutionary effervescence, the Almaviva family returns from Mexico and stops in Paris. We find the Count and Rosine, Figaro and Suzanne, Léon, illegitimate child of the Countess, Florestine, ward of the Count, as well as the Irishman Bégearss who covets the fortune of the Count and the hand of Florestine...

In this little-known episode, Beaumarchais talks about family secrets, love and death, underprivileged children, male domination, fanatic religiosity, dreamed independence and constructed and nurtured female guilt. Another way of telling the story of political manipulation and compromise.

A saga between drama and comedy, in which we will see that it is always fun to talk about the troubles of the bourgeoisie while playing on the liveliness and cheerfulness of a text that resonates surprisingly today.

C’était un Samedi (It Was a Saturday) — Irène Bonnaud

Radiant-Bellevue

Radiant-Bellevue

Address: 1 Rue Jean Moulin, 69300 Caluire-et-Cuire | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

Performance in Greek with French subtitles.

“Because it is a modest art form, because it knows how to open up a space for gathering and listening to stories, theatre has a role to play in telling the accounts of witnesses. The truth is always passed on by word of mouth.” – Irène Bonnaud

“In our little town, there were about 4,000 Jewish people, probably more. They were all gathered around their synagogue.” A sole woman, surrounded by figurines made from terracotta that are about the height of children. She sings and tells the story of the Romaniote Jewish community from Ioannina, in Epirus.

Inspired by a novel by Dimitris Hadzis, she recounts the lives of Sabethai Kabilis and Joseph Eliyia, who are friends despite their difference in age and class. She also tells of the deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau on Saturday 25 March 1944, based on real-life accounts. She talks about the Sonderkommando revolt at Birkenau, which is, in part, a Greek story. She resurrects the ghosts with tenderness and tenacity. The theatre acts as a guard for painful recollections.

Placed under the sign of friendship, this program invites us to discover the dancer and choreographer Amala Dianor who was the magnificent performer of Emanuel Gat. Of Franco-Senegalese origin, from hip hop culture, he develops a virtuoso and transgressive dance that crosses different styles: African dance, hip hop, contemporary and neo-classical. Extension is a duo created with Bboy Junior - world breakdance star - designed as a nod to their first stage joust during the 20th anniversary of the Suresnes Cité Danse Festival in 2012.

Translocality in the arts [East of the Globe]

Online

15:00 - 16:00 SGT | 16:00 - 17:00 JST/KST | 18:00 - 19:00 AEDT | 10:00 - 11:00 EET/ MSK | 09:00 - 10:00 CEST | 08:00 - 09:00 GMT | 03:00 - 04:00 EST | 00:00 - 01:00 PST

What is the future of international cultural collaboration in a reality in which postcolonial legacies continue to persist and the environment is rapidly degrading? What is the future of transborder artists exchanges in a world where inequalities and geographic disparities have only been growing and national frontiers have been strengthened?

In this session, Dutch philosopher, writer and poet Maarten Doorman will talk about the concept of translocality in the arts, which challenges the notions of national and international and emancipates the concept of the local in a global perspective. His intervention will be followed by reactions from art professionals based in Australia, Lebanon and Poland, and then the floor will be open for a discussion with the audience.

Trans(-)Missions(s) / Transition / Exchange / Transfer! / Passage?

What do we envision as the modalities of exchange of the future? What will trans-mission(s) mean for future generations of artists, performing arts professionals, the communities who benefit from our practices, as well as future generations of audiences?

This Open Forum is supposed to explore the idea of transmission in all its possible meanings. Think about the myriad of different discussions we can have around knowledge, experience and communication. Think about the intergenerational and peer-to-peer dialogues, the questions about artistic education, training, heritage, around the mechanism of power transfer and rites of passage.

This Open forum is dedicated to building a frame for conversations and collective outputs about the issues that hold the future of the performing arts sector in Europe and around the world.

Participants will be invited to work together about this theme, coming up with the topic that they want to place on the agenda themselves and sharing thoughts in the frame of self-managed workshops.

At the end of this session, all the groups will be able to meet, debrief and exchange about this collective experience.

A lunch break is planned for from 13:30 to 14:30 and we will have some morning coffee and snacks around 11:00.

Our long-missed Newsround session is a series of short (max 3-min) presentations of projects under development from IETM members and local participants. Some of them are looking for partners; some others need feedback.

Rather than a platform where to promote a work for touring, Newsround is a space where to share ideas and the starting point of long-term relationships. The benefit of this space is to find your future partners, gain an overview of what’s on and share new models of cooperation and best practices realised within the network.

Visit of Lablab

Location: Pôle PIXEL, 36 Rue Emile Decorps, 69100 Villeurbanne | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

Digital technologies are an integral part of the performance world and are changing our relationship to performance. We invite you to visit a space where art, research and technology are working in the same effervescence, where artistic creation rhymes with social innovation.

The LabLab is an artistic laboratory, a research and creation space for new audiovisual, immersive and interactive experiences. This creative hive brings together a community of makers in the arts and digital technology: it stimulates the mutualisation of spaces, equipment, technologies and skills through the dynamics of sharing and mutual support.

A visit of this digital creation space will be proposed by the two co-sponsors: AADN, which works for the development of digital arts and culture, and Theoriz studio, creators of state-of-the-art digital experiential environments. We will be able to meet some of the LabLab's residents: Natacha Paquignon, who develops a choreographic and digital language based on interactive devices designed for dance, and the visual artist Margot Raymond.

Location: Théâtre National Populaire (TNP), 8 Pl. du Dr Lazare Goujon, 69100 Villeurbanne | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

Passing on, training, mentoring, supporting... In a context of uncertain recomposition, how can we help young actors in the performing arts to make their way?  What can their more experienced colleagues bring to emerging artists and professionals?  And to what end?
Starting from the example of inspiring approaches and testimonies, this participative conversation will allow us to identify the first needs of emerging artists and professionals in a complex environment and to share knowledge about possible and effective forms of support for their development.

#METOO in the Cultural sector: from call-outs to structural change

Location: Théâtre National Populaire (TNP), 8 Pl. du Dr Lazare Goujon, 69100 Villeurbanne | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

No matter how atrocious and particular #MeToo cases are, they are never only related to an individual perpetrator. Sexual harassment and sexual abuse are forms of structural violence and are thus deeply entangled with the dominant gender, racial, economic and power structures.

Following an online session held as part of the SHIFT – Shared Initiatives for Training on October 6, this participatory discussion will dive deeper into sexual harassment, bullying and power abuse in the European art field and focus on the steps networks can take together to combat sexual harassment and power abuse.

We will be able to meet some of the LabLab's residents: Natacha Paquignon, who develops a choreographic and digital language based on interactive devices designed for dance, and the visual artist Margot Raymond.

Supporting emergence in the performing arts: what do we really need?

Théâtre des Célestins

Address: 4 Rue Charles Dullin, 69002 Lyon | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

Our long-missed Newsround session is a series of short (max 3-min) presentations of projects under development from IETM members and local participants. Some of them are looking for partners; some others need feedback.

Rather than a platform where to promote a work for touring, Newsround is a space where to share ideas and the starting point of long-term relationships. The benefit of this space is to find your future partners, gain an overview of what’s on and share new models of cooperation and best practices realised within the network.

Visit of the neighbourhood of La Saulaie

Meeting point: Mémo (Médiathèque Municipale d’Oullins), Rue de la République, 69600 Oullins | Event Map

Grounded between the railway and the A7 motorway, La Saulaie is an old working-class district that used to be home to the SNCF railway workshops. Between industrial wastelands and run-down buildings, the Metropolis of Lyon and the Municipality of Oullins are designing a "revitalised sustainable eco-district". Rehabilitation, transformation, development... The urban development project is planned over a dozen years with the aim of improving the living environment, opening up the city centre and improving connections with the urban area.

How do the inhabitants participate in defining this urban project? What role do performing arts and culture play in this transformation? The actors of the urban project will guide us through the district of La Saulaie, its history and the projects that are being drawn up, its working class culture and the culture that could be invented there.

When the law, particularly the law of contracts, becomes the subject of art. In this performance, the ten co-authors from Conakry to Grenoble assert their contractual ties against the migration policies that try to separate them. Whether they have valid papers to stay in France, they are seeking asylum, or they are prohibited from staying here, they work together and invoke a principle of co-dependence. Enriched by meetings with legal system professionals, documentaries, archives and oral histories, this activism, which is both artistic and legal, highlights the need for acts of resistance.

Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse

Address: Pl. Joannes Ambre, 69004 Lyon | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

“The only place where I can speak is the stage. Not to condemn, but to question what is happening around me. Perhaps I am waiting for something to change and I am waiting for it to give me just a small place, a place in this space that is the theatre.” – Chrystèle Khodr

Three different perspectives on the period of war in Lebanon. What connects them? The theatre. Hanane Hajj Ali and Randa Asmara decided to become actors at the start of the 1980s, in the middle of a civil war in Beirut. Chrystèle Khodr belongs to the post-war generation. She creates a stage for the two actors, who retrace their theatre career and try to reconstruct the memory of this fragmented city.
Blending fiction and personal accounts, they try to draw a map of places that are now gone during the performance. What is it like to do theatre in a war-torn country? This is an opportunity to examine the relationship that these artists maintain with their profession and the need to perform in the last free place.

Address: 14 Rue Basse Combalot, 69007 Lyon | Event Map

Performance in French without subtitles.

(…) Poetry is no longer about beauty, it is a shockwave, the disenchantment of an unkind heart. Across scores of occurrences, all the smoking steps sting the earth, the ocean in its internal desert; the thirst that is utopia. Remaining in this partition, scarred, half-burned, strained from the anger of those disappeared beyond the roads and the blades of sharp silences. I have escaped on the whole. And I pretend to watch a nightmare, an action that happens in five movements: Exile, Border, Wandering, Death, Transition.

Access for disabled audiences in an institutional context

Location: Maison de la Danse, 8 Av. Jean Mermoz, 69008 Lyon | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

As a place where dance and the most diverse aesthetics meet, the Maison de la Danse strongly claims to be welcoming all audiences.
How does this Lyon-based international institution approach the issue of accessibility for people with disabilities?

The Maison de la Danse team will present the numerous mediation actions they have put in place to tackle interpretation of choreographic works in French Sign Language, audio description services, production of shows in specialised institutions. This will also be an opportunity to talk about the municipal public policy that aims to support the creation of a more accessible cultural offer.

During our visit, we will also get to know Numéridanse, the multimedia dance platform which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It is a unique video collection accessible to all, an innovative resource for artistic and cultural education.

Time to Act session

Location: Maison de la Danse, 8 Av. Jean Mermoz, 69008 Lyon | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

52% of European performing arts professionals rate their knowledge of work by disabled artists as either poor or very poor.

87% of European venues and festivals don't involve disabled people in selection panels or in the commissioning process.

How can we address these questions and act at the level of programmers, venues but also companies and collectives?
How can the level of knowledge of disabled artists’ works be increased and nurtured? How do we ensure that experiences and learnings of small and independent companies, venues and festivals are considered and recognised? How do we move beyond ticking the box of ‘disability’ in one’s funding application and towards a cultural ecosystem that is genuinely more equitable, inclusive and diverse in its cultural programming?

This session will explore some of the initial findings of a major new study spanning 40 European countries into the barriers that disabled people experience when accessing the arts, with a particular focus on programming works by disabled artists in Europe. At the NTH8, we can find (among others) teams in the process of creation, apprentice performers in training, children, teenagers, residents who are participating in artistic workshops, a Theatre and French Sign Language department and more.

This will also be an opportunity to talk about the municipal public policy that aims to support the creation of a more accessible cultural offer.

This session is conceived by the British Council, part of the Creative Europe project Europe Beyond Access in collaboration with On the Move and the researchers associated to the Time to Act Report.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Karavel festival ends with the Hip Hop Games. Halfway between battle and choreographic creation, this international competition brings together several crews around a series of challenges.

Created in 2011 by Lille-based choreographer Romuald Brizolier, the Hip Hop Games quickly spread across the planet - to the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Denmark - to become one of the most original events in the hip-hop world. The show is a real spectacle, skilfully staged by the HHG troupe.

In solo, duo or team, the crews challenge each other in creative events where the sense of improvisation, artistic risk-taking, humour and creativity are evaluated by a jury of wise professionals. A constantly renewed show that allows the public to live a unique experience!
