XXXXX... A Situation for dancing - Antonija Livingstone/Heather Kravas
DANCE AND DISOBEDIENCE. Four evenings. Four different dance performances that can be viewed singly or as a whole. A dance to all four points of the compass where movements are echoed and repeated. The four winds blow through this four-star work with four eyes taking a bold, hard gaze at clichés about women. The Vancouver dancer and performer Antonija Livingstone, who has danced for Benoît Lachambre and Meg Stuart, among others, has teamed up with the New York choreographer and performer Heather Kravas for a cynical waltz in quadruple time that is hair-raising, provocative, unsettling and playful. It marries dance with a brass band and a chamber orchestra, has a couple embrace both onstage and in the audience and puts a stepladder together with a man who rains small bits of paper down onto the stage. As abolitionists, the two artists are situationists who use dance to attack the prevailing ideology, replacing it with poetry, celebration and play. They demonstrate how traditional models are perpetuated in a performance where institutions and individuals play their assigned roles. And what a thrill to smash that structure to pieces, in four-four time!
