With the escalation of resentment towards foreigners in Europe - as merely everywhere worldwide - in recent years and the reinforcement of the idea of the nation-state, a question did arise: is art at all significant for possible social change? Can art do anything that goes beyond the realms of symbolic subversiveness? Can culture and art organisations influence the (re)construction of national and supranational identities? How can cultures of diverse national and macro-regional communities be more directly represented on and off stage?
