Festival DDD: Luísa Saraiva - Enchente

Artistic programme

A piece on the relations, connections and interactions between individual and collective emergency experiences.
Enchente [Flood] is a piece on the way crowds physically behave during times of anxiety or excitement, or in emergency or panic situations. It looks at the movements and physicality the body produces, not only with regard to its subjective experience (a kind of anxious version of Steve Paxton’s small dance), but also, and mainly, within the group. It deals with spatial constellations, courses and trajectories tending to arise in the masses in disruptive situations (such as disasters, attacks or riots, but also concerts, raves or Black Fridays). How can I save myself? How can I help myself? How can I help others? How can I save myself and help others at the same time? These tasks enable one to analyse the decision-making processes, and the criteria involved in assessing risk potential, and in the need to take action or intervene. The political processes involved in perceiving vulnerability and the need to care for the other matter. Dance emerges as a separate element, which results from the need to simultaneously create intimacy and distance: distance when acting as a voyeur and watching interactions in order to make decisions; intimacy when it comes to the movement and the dance produced by the body. • LS
