Art & activism
The movement for audience development, inclusion and engagement is a strong catalyst for empowering people and reclaiming citizenship. Engaged audience seems to be at the same time engaged citizens. However, in the meantime, focusing on audience development, the art world seems to have lost its leadership to challenge the world or its capacity to do so. As a result, the artist can be seen as torn between being a romantic outsider and an activist insider. Shall the performing arts express a deeper desire to become components of civic movements? How can they reconnect with the population and contribute to social change?
