Do you understand my art?
The performing arts are known to resonate with the communication codes of the elite. By being in touch with this elite, we tend to tap into those codes even further. But overly complex work, as well as the way to communicate about it, creates linguistic apartheid. Nicolas Boileau said: “Whatever is well conceived is clearly said, and the words to say it flow with ease”. So how can artists create and talk about their work in a way that is understandable for everyone without being condescending or compromising their art?
