In memoriam: Gil Mendo (1946 – 2022)

It is with great sadness we at IETM have learnt that Gil Mendo has passed away. Gil was a devoted IETM member for many years and a member of the board of directors of IETM, in the early years of the network. 

Teacher, programmer, professor at the Escola Superior de Dança, founder of Fórum Dança, to name a few of his positions, Gil played a crucial role in the national and international development of the Portuguese contemporary dance scene. 

IETM is deeply grateful to Gil for his contributions towards the networks for decades and we send Gil´s family, friends and colleagues our most sincere condolences.

"Once in a while, we meet a woman or a man, who quietly, away from the spotlights, performs miracles. A woman or a man who obstinately and unrelentlessly fights daily fights, changes views, opens doors. A woman or a man that makes the world move. Such a man was Gil Mendo, discreet but never tiring, militant for dance and dancers. Combatant for the arts in Portugal, Europe or beyond. For IETM, a tireless networker, wise adviser, board member. For us all, a supporter with the warmest smile.

So grateful to have known you, dear Gil."
