Most artists earn very little. Nevertheless, there is no shortage of aspiring young artists. Do they give to the arts willingly or unknowingly? Governments and other institutions also give to the arts, to raise the low incomes. But their support is ineffective: subsidies only increase the artists' poverty. The economy of the arts is exceptional. Although the arts operate successfully in the marketplace, their natural affinity is with gift-giving, rather than with commercial exchange. People believe that artists are selflessly dedicated to art, that price does not reflect quality, and that the...
"Nobody cares how you pay your rent. Your job is to show us something we didn’t know we needed to see. But it is, nonetheless, a job."
Most arts majors come from money. Most artists didn’t major in the arts. What does that say about the sector?
"It seems to me that the reason why precarity has divisive effects on the community is because it forces people to be competitive. When you want to acquire funding for your projects and yourself, fellow artists become competitors you have to prevail against."
"This article presents findings from an in-depth project carried out with five audience-participants at cultural events during Leeds’ annual LoveArts festival. The researchers asked participants to explain what the arts meant to them. They discovered that people found cultural value difficult to articulate. They concluded that instead of striving to rationalise the value of the arts, we should try to feel and experience it."
“Art is not able to change the world, but art can show the future and the past. We had to come back and deal with identity. You can’t rebuild a country without rebuilding identity.” Rithy Pahn
The cultural sector is notable for its diversity but all organisations must now devote greater attention to risk management, effective supervision, accountability and the challenges of working with mixed funding flows. This Governance Code will help them to ensure that all management and supervision arrangements are in order. It sets out nine principles together with recommendations for their practical implementation.
In 15 days the UK will take to the polls and vote to remain in or leave the European Union. I for one will be voting to remain in. I will do so on the one hand because of a deep personal belief in the EU, on the rights it offers, the liberties it upholds and because I want to play no part in any attempt to dissolve the largest peace project in history. But importantly I will also be voting to remain in from a professional perspective.
"Creative drama has grown in recent years and become the keystone of the work of numerous charities, NGOs and theatre companies across Europe. Programmes using this approach provide bespoke toolkits and advanced training, tailored with care to individual situations in order to access the cultural traditions and understanding of a project’s audience to clearly and sensitively address areas of conflict for communities or age groups."
Élargir la participation à la vie culturelle
Audience engagement is a contextual and often contingent process. It is defined by wider politicl disocurses and agendas and Élargir la participation à la vie culturelle makes this very clear. Publication sets audience engagement practices in relation to various cultural policies from the post-was democratisation to recent culture-led development policies. Apart from being a good overview of these relations from the French perspective, it shines even more in the way it presents case studies - critical, detailed analysis of each of the 20 projects makes it clear how challenging, limiting and...
