Directed by Teya Sugareva, this original theatre piece explores the complexities of Virginia Woolf's life, positioning her as one of the foremost figures in modern literature. Set against the backdrop of turbulent wartime conditions, as the world stands on the precipice of impending catastrophe, Virginia Woolf confronts the limits of her own endurance. Struggling with deteriorating health and a restless mind, she finds herself unable to engage in her literary pursuits, culminating tragically in a final, fatal attempt at suicide.

What is Virginia Woolf Afraid Of? aims to reassess this profound act, revealing within it the inherent beauty of the human spirit and an unyielding thirst for life – genuine and unbridled, emancipated from society norms and personal fears. Furthermore, it endeavours to portray her death as a dignified and affirming claim of life.

Going beyond the confines of her erudite persona, the portrayal of Virginia Woolf unveils recollections of childhood comfort, the exuberance of youth and the poignancy of first love. Presenting her as a figure almost fragile and resilient, distant yet intimately relatable, as she struggles constantly with her inner demons, overcoming the limitations of perception with the profound insight of a true visionary.
