In German, the term ‘Nachwuchskünstler*in’ (emerging artist) is closely tied to the notion of offspring, evoking cultural associations with childhood - change, renewal, future and hope. Yet, for many artists, this state of emergence becomes permanent. Trapped in a perpetual in-between, they struggle with irregular income, scarce opportunities and intense competition, all while bearing the weight of high expectations. The dramaturgy and programming team at Sophiensæle, Lena Kollender and Mateusz Szymanówka invites international colleagues to reflect on this precarious condition and exchange strategies for supporting early-career artists (in smaller and bigger groups). Building on the venue’s work with emerging artists, we aim to exchange perspectives on the complex relationship between artists at the start of their careers and the platforms that present work and aesthetics still in the process of ‘emerging’.

The digital stage HAU4 is a platform for the connection between performances & technology and gaming culture. The programme is presented both online and on the theatre stages. On 15 May, HAU will present outstanding HAU4 artists. The audience has the opportunity to immerse themselves in hybrid performances, interactive XR experiments and various game worlds. At the centre is the question of how an artistic perspective can be productive in dealing with social change, in which commercial technology and authoritarian politics are becoming increasingly intertwined. There will be an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the artists.
Artists:
allapopp, Anan Fries, Choy Ka Fai, Interrobang, Janne Kummer, Keiken, Lena Biresch, machina eX, onlinetheater.live, Patrick Blenkarn & Milton Lim and Theresa Reiwer.
