13:00 - 15:00 - Tanz im August and sustainability: Rehearsing ecological festival practices
Organisation: Tanz im August
Address: HAU3 (Houseclub), Tempelhofer Ufer 10, 10963 Berlin | Event Map
Meeting point: Walk through the backyard until you see a HAU sign. Walk along the building to the right of the sign, until the end of the second backyard. On the left, you'll find the ground-level entrance to the 'Houseclub' studio.
In times of rising right-wing movements, inflation and budget cuts, one crucial issue often fades into the background: climate change. But how can ecological sustainability and artistic practice remain aligned—especially in times of crisis? And how do (international) festivals navigate the conflicts that arise from these challenges?
Berlin is known for its vibrant cultural scene, yet it faces increasing political and financial pressures. While funding cuts, like the recent reductions by the Berlin Senate, have an immediate impact, climate change continues to progress more subtly, but will threaten humanity even more. This makes it all the more important to keep the issue at the forefront.
Tanz im August, presented by HAU Hebbel am Ufer, invites colleagues to HAU3 (Houseclub) to discuss sustainable festival practices. Together, we will share perspectives, learn from one another, and explore innovative paths toward a more environmentally conscious future.

The digital stage HAU4 is a platform for the connection between performances & technology and gaming culture. The programme is presented both online and on the theatre stages. On 15 May, HAU will present outstanding HAU4 artists. The audience has the opportunity to immerse themselves in hybrid performances, interactive XR experiments and various game worlds. At the centre is the question of how an artistic perspective can be productive in dealing with social change, in which commercial technology and authoritarian politics are becoming increasingly intertwined. There will be an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the artists.
Artists:
allapopp, Anan Fries, Choy Ka Fai, Interrobang, Janne Kummer, Keiken, Lena Biresch, machina eX, onlinetheater.live, Patrick Blenkarn & Milton Lim and Theresa Reiwer.
