Senses of Liveness for Digital Times

Performing arts allow us to creatively challenge digitally remediated experience, and to collectively reflect on and explore its prolific scales, materials, and modes of existence. Through celebrations of diversity and idiosyncrasy, live performance helps us counter the normative, deadly pressures of digitisation.  This keynote will look at how theatre - Artaud's crucible - is a uniquely powerful means for mobilising the poetic energies that characterise what is human, and what it is to be human. This in turn is seen as a source of vital resilience, tuning our senses of liveness to digital - and post-digital - times.

 

Sally Jane Norman joined the University of Sussex in 2010 as Professor of Performance Technologies, steering a major performing arts refurbishment project until her engagement in 2015 as founding Co-Director of the Sussex Humanities Lab, where she leads the Digital Performance research strand. Her publications on liveness and performing arts, in areas ranging from ancient theatre to digital networks, are strongly informed by her experimental practice. She is regularly engaged in international cultural policy and research consultation and lobbying initiatives.
