Building Conversation
What is left of theatre when we reduce it to its core? For the Dutch director Lotte van den Berg, theatre is first and foremost an agreement to communicate. No small talk, but – inspired by the political philosopher Chantal Mouffe – an agonistic negotiation of different opinions: to share a conflict without entirely resolving it. Over the years, Lotte van den Berg has gradually been getting closer to that core through her work. Now, with “Building Conversation”, she has taken the last, logical step. Together with the visual artist Daan ’t Sas, they free theatre from all ‘As If’ and realize it as what it is: a place of communication, of meeting, a room where conflicts are shown and experienced. Inspired by live communication techniques from all over the world, models and frames for dialogue are developed.
For this participatory performance they invite 20 people for an Agonistic Conversation based on the practice of the Maori: a current conflict in society is looked upon and talked about from three different physical positions in space. There are no actors, no audience. Just you. And the invitation to a passionate conversation.
