It is in the nature of the arts to research reality by the use of imagination. It is in the nature of people to define the reality by values, upbringing, social, geographical and cultural context.  Art is said to have the power to break down barriers between different groups. But is our sector fully reflective of the diversity of realities lived in the cities we live in? What strategies has the arts world proposed to address the always other, gendered, raced, differently abled, or colonial body? What role should we play in unlocking our societies, as well as our own sector, to the multiplicity of values, backgrounds, traditions and lifestyles? What should be our responsibility and how should we share it with our allies in the field? This debate is about the urgency to open up the arts to all of society - to all the classes, ethnicities, religions, physical abilities, and backgrounds that constitute it.
