Across Europe, the arts field complains about budget cuts and lack of public support. But some debates go one step further. On the one side are the proposals that suppress all public support to the arts in return for a universal basic grant for every citizen. It may relieve artists from the burden of fundraising and accounting, but would it be an incentive to the artist’s excellence and really allow them to make a living without a compromise?
On the other side are those promoting "everyday creativity". They are convinced that arts should be as accessible as sports and claim that (part of the) subsidies should be redirected to non-professionals. But while everyone can play football, it doesn’t mean anyone can become Cristiano Ronaldo, does it?
