Pre-meeting trip to Charleroi

Experiences

For the last few years, several increasingly collaborative projects have started to bloom on Charleroi’s dark terrain. Charleroi danse - our co-organiser in Brussels - invites you on a walk to discover street art and brand new cultural institutions. Charleroi danse, le BPS22, le Vecteur, le Quai10 and la Manufacture Urbaine are as much witnesses as they are actors to the rebirth of Wallonia’s most populated city. Climb a slag heap, a relic of past mining activity, and marvel at this post-industrial landscape.

Reserve your place

Registration deadline: 20 November

No need to worry about the weather: in case of rain we will offer you an indoor programme that will keep your feet dry.

Programme

08:00 Meeting at Brussels South Station outside the Eurostar terminal. Ludovica Riccardi from Charleroi danse will wait for you there with a sign reading ‘IETM’.
08:30 Departure from Brussels South Station by bus.
09:45 Welcoming coffee and breakfast at Les Écuries/Charleroi danse.
10:15

Visit of Les Écuries/Charleroi danse and presentation of the artist-in-residence Fanny Brouyaux.

Charleroi danse, the Centre chorégraphique de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, supports artists living in French-speaking Belgium through artistic residencies, the use of studios, and logistical or financial support to facilitate their creative process, research, production and circulation. The activities of Charleroi danse are organized at Les Écuries, the former stables of the gendarmerie (Charleroi) and at La Raffinerie, the former Gräffe sugar refinery (Brussels).

The young Belgian dancer and choreographer Fanny Broyaux will present her upcoming project De la poésie, du sport, etc. In this piece, Broyaux explores the complex and controversial notion of femininity in a series of choreographic poems, in collaboration with actress Sophie Guisset and slam poet Leïla Duquaine.

11:15

Presentation of the new urban and cultural development of Charleroi by Pauline Cabrit, collaborator of Georgios Maïllis, Bouwmeester of Charleroi.

The Bouwmeester office is an engine for exploration, impulse, collaboration, consultation and above all the realisation of structural projects for the city of Charleroi. It advises the Municipal Executive and the City Council of Charleroi to pursue coherent urban, landscape, and architectural development.

12:30

Presentation of La Manufacture Urbaine and lunch.

La Manufacture Urbaine is a platform dedicated to the production and valorisation of high-quality food, and accompanying food culture. It produces staple foods (beer, bread, coffee) with insight and know-how. Its mission is to initiate and stimulate these “crafts”, but also to transmit the taste and knowledge of high-quality creations.

14:15

Presentation of Quai 10 by Matthieu Bakolas, Director of Quai 10, and visit of the future business centre and harbour.

Quai10 is a space that brings together two essential disciplines from the world of contemporary images, cinema, and video gaming. It provides a forum for the exchange of ideas inspired by images. More than a cinema or a space for video gaming, it offers a creative and pedagogical approach that appeals to the general public as well as to various players in the fields of culture and education.

15:30

Climbing of the terril des Piges.

This artificial hill is a result of the city’s coal industry. Blending the darkness of coal with the beauty of the green landscape, it marks the border between the city and its industrial zone. The climb through this rich and dense biodiversity (there are even wild orchids!) leads to a stunning panoramic view.

17:15

Presentation of BPS22 by Pierre-Olivier Rollin, Director of BPS22.

BPS22 - Musée d’art de la Province de Hainaut (The Museum of Fine Arts of the Province of Hainaut) is one of the biggest museums in French-speaking Belgium. Its hybrid location, in the heart of Charleroi, consists of a raw industrial building and a white cube that is perfectly adapted to museum standards. BPS22 organizes a varied programme of exhibitions and mediation activities focused on cultural and social phenomena.

18:30

Welcome drink and presentation of Le Vecteur by Romain Voisin, Coordinator of Le Vecteur.

Le Vecteur is a cultural platform uniting various organisations active in literature, cinema, music and contemporary art. In its public programme, Le Vecteur explores what arises from the margins, the unexpected and the unconventional part of Culture (with a capital C) in an ambition to make it accessible to all.

19:30 Departure from Charleroi by bus.
20:30

Arrival in Brussels South station.
