Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, once said that artists are the ‘crown jewels’ of the European project, but the European project itself lost part of its shining aureole to Eurosceptic and criticism on its functioning. As it stands, culture isn’t an active domain: neither the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, nor Juncker’s White Paper on the Future of Europe mention the role of culture. What can we, as hyper-mobile, agile and bridge-building art professionals do to help Europe build brighter futures? And what is Europe willing to offer the arts? In this session we will shine light on the roles we want to take and which are the ones most valued by those who decide on the future of Europe.
