The city as a commons
The current scale of growing tourism affects citizens’ quality of life and does not bypass the local artists - those who make the city attractive in the first place. Rising prices for housing, food and everyday necessities make surviving in a “dream travel destination” challenging, to say the least. How to counter the negative impact of tourism on city life and the local arts community? And what role can artists themselves play in transforming the status quo? The session will kick off with a presentation on the development of civic economy in Europe, followed by a presentation and discussion about the reality in Porto today, after which participants can choose one of three round tables on ethical finances and crowdfunding, community engagement, and relationships with institutions.
