Festival DDD: Olga Roriz - A Meio da Noite

Artistic programme

A tribute to Bergman’s men and women.

Ingmar Bergman was born on July 14, 1918. Few directors have been able to explore the depth of human beings as he was. His nightmares inspired many of his films, in which space and time fade away from reality. Bergman was mostly obsessed with religion, death and the inability to communicate. What was most important to him, however, was communication itself: without it, we would be dead. Sometimes it seems love can bring redemption, but every time the characters seem to realise, the light is taken from the screen. Although he was interested in all human beings, Bergman didn’t hide that he preferred to work with women, claiming they are better at acting perhaps because they are more connected to their thoughts. The truth is that Bergman’s women are not a myth; they exist in all their splendour and complexity. The references are overwhelming, both in numbers and in how difficult it is to analyse and interpret each character. I draw inspiration from that vision of his, from those frighteningly real men and women in a constant, lonely struggle with their inner selves, and relentlessly seeking to understand themselves and others. • OR
