Defining rural
When thinking of rural, farming land and remote beautiful landscapes are often what springs to mind. There are plenty of these in Wales, but in a country like Wales, which only has 2 main cities (Cardiff and Swansea), one can only be aware that rural is a lot more complex than this romantic perception. For example, there is a reality of post-industrial towns with little access to arts provision, stricken by deprivation are part of rural setting too.
What culture lives in the rural areas? Who are the creators, the audience and the intermediaries?
Which strategies can be used to enable a vibrant arts provision outside of the big cities?
The case studies on working in rural areas and defining what rural is from various perspectives will be followed by a panel discussion.
