Decolonising the rural
What is the relationship between the colonial and the rural? To what extent can urbanism be experienced as a colonial force? How do hierarchies of cultural practice function across ideas of ‘urban’ and ‘rural’? ‘Decolonising’ or de-colonial practices are increasingly drawn upon to dissect, reframe and rethink issues of power, privilege and oppression. How might such frames map onto rural constituencies? How do we explore ideas and narratives around ‘rural cultures’, their marginalisation and de-legitimisation? Where is the radical in the rural?
The workshop will introduce these themes and facilitate a discursive journey through associated ideas, drawing on creative writing, group work, paired conversations and discussion.
