Pitch your work
In the arts, pitching is often associated with overselling, acting loudly, advertising oneself and even embarrassment. And indeed, there might be some good reasons to be wary of getting it wrong. If your environment is hostile to artists’ self-promotion, would the only way forward be to adapt and abstain from it? But what if the environment itself adapts? If codes of conduct weaken? If theatres, museums, galleries, cinemas, festivals and other venues experience a decrease in audience and attention? We live in the times of a rapid change, and digitalisation is one of the factors driving it. How can we make sure we do not slip of the attention so much needed for our practices to make sense and exist?
So, if you think you can’t do it, learn it. If you think you don’t like it, give it a try. Very often, you may not need to pitch at all. Yet by finding your own formula, style and tone, you could achieve this. And that puts you in a strong position, a position of choice.
