Hip hop culture and its related dance forms
After joining one of the battles at the StreetArt -Festival “Funk the system” at Whitebox, we will be talking about community-linked hip-hop culture as a new target group for theatre. How does hip-hop culture provoke new choreographic languages and how is the context of theatre and a stage influencing hip-hop-related dance forms?
Urban cultures are more and more part of theatre programmes - where is the common interest between theatre and hip-hop culture and how can audiences widen and possibly merge? On one hand, we talk about an outreach to new audiences, while hip-hop events gather a huge amount of spectators. The development of urban dance theatre questions the choreographic dimension of hip-hop related dance forms. Is a new aesthetic arising? And how is this dimension feeding back into urban dance?
