Boy with a Suitcase, written by Mike Kenny, tells the story of Naz, a 12 year old boy who is forced to leave his home and undertake a long and dangerous journey to a ‘promised land’ where his brother lives, in pursuit of a better life. 

In his small suitcase, Naz carries his biggest treasure - bedtime stories told by his parents during his childhood. With the help of these stories and Krysia, a girl he meets along the way, Naz manages to meet with his brother in safety and tell a new story: his own.

An auteur project by Ersan Mondtag, one of the most promising young artists of the German and European theatre scenes. Living Room at the Belgrade Drama Theatre is a part of the eponymous project initiated in 2021 in the Belgian theatre NTGent.

The title is a word play which is untranslatable into Serbian – since it is a living room, i.e. sitting room or - literally translated from English - a room for living.

“My international career was launched several years ago, at the 51st Bitef festival, which makes my relationship with Belgrade quite unique and I’m glad to be back. Living Room, the second part of the trilogy The Living, is a story about life. We see an elderly woman who is getting ready for work in her living room. Once the stage rotates, we see a young woman in the same situation. That’s practically the same life over the course of 40 years.”

Dancing Trees is a site-specific dance theatre show by the independent theatre troupe and artistic collective DAH Theatre, created in collaboration with the Belgrade Dance Institute. The performance explores the importance of tree preservation. Who is the mysterious Lady Frola who moved into our neighbourhood? And why doesn’t she live with the son-in-law who visits all the time, or with her daughter who never goes out and no one has ever seen! What secret are they hiding, and what misfortune drove them here from the town where they lived before?
These are the questions that trouble the characters of this play by Pirandello. Having nothing – except emptiness – behind the respectable and important social masks that they wear, they become obsessive and tireless in digging around and analysing other people’s lives, in the firm belief that they can get to the truth.
‘Right you are, if you think so’ is a humorous, cynical and wise play by the Nobel Prize laureate and famous Italian playwright Luigi Pirandello, one of the most important reformers of drama theatre in the 20th century. It contains motifs and ideas that resonate with the times we live in, where truth equals information, and compassion for those closest to us wanes and disappears before the desire for sensation.

Following the performances at the Zagreb Youth Theatre and at the Slovenian National Theatre Drama in Ljubljana, director Sebastijan Horvat is ending the year with Heiner Müller’s Cement at the Belgrade Drama Theatre. 

Cement is a piece about turmoil; from the revolutionary times that it treats, the struggle between the emancipatory aspirations of his characters and their anchoring in the traditional family relationships they grew up in, to the romantic relationship between the main characters, reflecting the impact of social circumstances on the most intimate level. 

This third performance in Belgrade, inspired by the great East German playwright Cement, will be based on an original play by Milan Ramšak Marković, in which the place and time of the story moves to Belgrade in the present day. 

The relationship between trauma, memory and political dementia that we gradually get lost in and the conflict that is encoded in our bodies are just some of the motifs introduced by this last act of a conversation with Heiner Müller.

Aleksija Rajčić, the main heroine of Đorđe Kosić's play, has not had many choices in her life. Like all the other women, she is surrounded by those whose lives represent the model through which hers is expected to function. In a world steeped by the patriarchy, the only thing expected from Aleksija is to keep silent and endure hardships. The only alternative to a life that was predestined for violence and deprived of any choice, happiness or possibility of emancipation, even before it began, is death. 

Through a specific stylistic intervention in which he combines all the supporting characters in a male and female choir, the author of the play singles out Aleksija and her experience, putting them in focus alongside the depersonalised characters of this story, i.e. society, which is the biggest obstacle in this woman’s search for freedom and happiness.

In addition to the formal shaping of the text, the playwright also plays with the language, skillfully depicting the traumatic life story of a woman who, paradoxically, finds a way out of the vicious circle of violence and ultimate freedom in prison.

Haris Pasovic, a world-renowned director, whose glittering achievements have been staged in Belgrade theatres, presents August Strindberg’s play Miss Julie at the Madleninum.

Set in contemporary Slovenia, Julie is the daughter of a Slovenian mogul who is no more an aristocrat, but her ancestors were. At the same time, Jean, her servant who comes from Serbia, is a Gastarbeiter (guest worker) who earns a living at her father’s estate. The play explores the class and gender dynamics between the two.

Just like in the play, the story happens during the nightly celebration where alcohol, sleeplessness and a party atmosphere lead to acts of passion between the main two characters, ultimately to their regrets. This concept gives Pasovic a possibility to spotlight the economic inequality that exists between the EU and non-EU citizens.

Sara Dirnbek, who plays Julie, and Mina Pavlica, who plays Jean, bring Miss Julie to life on stage, alongside a sterling ensemble cast, as a contemporary up to date love story.
