Please note that the majority of the programme is taking place in the venues of the independent scene of Ljubljana and Maribor. Although many of the venues are doing their best to accommodate wheelchair users and the venues are accessible, they do not have accessible toilets.
In Maribor
The city centre of Maribor has mediaeval paving which is uneven and can be difficult to navigate in a wheelchair. The programme includes a walking tour, which can be modified if necessary; contact us on ietm@ietm.org if you would like to discuss this. Please see below for details of the accessibility of each venue.
In Ljubljana
Apart from the paved streets in the city centre, Ljubljana is said to be a wheelchair-friendly city. Public toilets are adapted for wheelchair users, most public buses are equipped with ramps and most taxi services have adapted vehicles available.
Bus stops also include braille maps and crossroads are equipped with beeping sounds.
To find out more about the accessibility of the city we recommend the official website of Visit Ljubljana as well as Ljubljana by wheelchair specifically about mobility.

In Maribor
The second-largest city in Slovenia, Maribor is located in the northeast of the country, nestled in between the green Pohorje Mountain, the Drava River and the picturesque wine-growing hills with rich historic and cultural roots, reaching back to the Middle Ages. The European Capital of Culture in 2012 and (to some) the Slovenian football capital, Maribor is home to famous festivals; from the renowned multicultural Lent Festival, the Maribor Theatre Festival, the International Puppet Festival, stop motion animation festival StopTrik, the Festival of Classical Music and many more artistic festivals to the Wine and Culinary Festival of the oldest vine in the world.
Maribor is only a 1.5 hour drive from the capital, Ljubljana; a trip to the oldest town in Slovenia, Ptuj, takes only 30 minutes and the journey to the gorgeous coastline takes approx. 2.5 hours. At the same time Maribor is only 11 km from the Austrian border.
At the meeting
It is our aim to make the IETM Caravan Ljubljana as accessible as possible. However, it may not be possible to offer all access requirements at every location. We therefore recommend that you check out the information for the desired location beforehand.
The accessibility of each venue will be uploaded upon confirmation of the full programme.
All accessibility details are collected based on the information received from the venues' staff and their websites. If you need more information, please feel free to get in touch with the venues directly.
There will be a range of accessibility features available at the meeting.
As we have budget restrictions and are dependent on the local infrastructure, we cannot always guarantee that the conditions will be the same from one meeting to another. Nevertheless, for this meeting we are able to:
- Offer preferential rates for disabled participants;
- Offer a free registration for your support worker;
- Offer our assistance before the meeting in order to answer your questions and to make accommodations to your access needs;
- Send you a large print version of the programme;
- Offer English subtitles for all performances in Slovenian;
If you have any accessibility questions or requests, please get in touch with us by writing to ietm@ietm.org.
Ljubljana
Ljubljana is the political and cultural heart of Slovenia, but more importantly Ljubljana is also a city of culture. It is home to numerous theatres, museums and galleries and boasts one of the oldest philharmonic orchestras in the world. The city has about 300,000 inhabitants and over 10,000 cultural events take place in the city every year, among which there are ten international festivals.
The city's appearance is a harmonious mix of Italian baroque and Art Nouveau. After the earthquake of 1895, modern Ljubljana was shaped by the strong personal style of Jože Plečnik, a great European architect and a local of Ljubljana. The cityscape was complemented by his modernist followers as well as by creations of the ‘New Wave’ of acknowledged young architects and socialist architecture. The architectural style is well blended with greenery and Ljubljana is also a city with the highest percentage of green space per inhabitant in Europe.
According to one of the many etymological explanations, its name is derived from the word ‘ljubljena’, meaning ‘loved’. It is therefore not surprising that Ljubljana is beloved by its citizens and visitors alike.
Ljubljana has a continental climate with all four seasons, and expected temperatures will range from -2ºC early mornings and nights to maximums of around 9ºC in mid March.

It is buzzing with activities: several groups use it as their rehearsal venue and it is a place for different workshops which range from cultural management to dance techniques. In the evening, the power station is a venue for various contemporary performances and other multimedia events.
The programme in the Old Power Station is a combination of international performances, presented in the frame of various festivals, as well as a selection of interesting Slovene contemporary artists.
The red thread of all events in The Old Power Station is the desire to explore and move the boundaries of the aesthetic and the expected, as well as the desire for engagement in the local and global environment.
Accessibility: The venue is wheelchair accessible, but does not have accessible toilets. Hearing loops are installed.
The New Post Office
The New Post Office, co-produced by Maska Ljubljana (NGO) and Mladinsko theatre (city theatre), is a place for dialogue, meetings and confrontations, a place for thinking about wider social events and responses to them. Within its programme, discussions, presentations and round tables, as well as workshops, thematic or genre focused cycles or festivals are happening. They are opening the selected themes with new creations, guest performances and theoretical contributions. They connect with like-minded artists, particularly from the independent scene. The New Post Office provides the venue for new pieces of devised theatre.
Accessibility: The venue is wheelchair accessible, but does not have accessible toilets.
Cukrarna
Address: Poljanski nasip 40, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia
With the opening of Cukrarna Gallery in September 2021, the Slovenian capital has gained a new space that serves both as a venue for exhibiting contemporary art and as a place where thoughts can be explored and contemporary art projects of all kinds – visual, intermedia, performance, sound, music and more – can be created and presented. The presentation of artworks through exhibitions and events is just one part of Cukrarna Gallery’s programme, however: our main aim is to become a new cultural hub. Working with artists and other stakeholders from Slovenia and beyond, and fostering longer-term participation and interaction, our fundamental mission is to fulfil the role of a truly contemporary art institution: to root our exhibition, interpretation and education activities in pro-social, humanistic principles – respect for the other, responsibility towards the environment, and robust social criticism so as to constantly hold a questioning mirror to society – and to do all this in a way that is in keeping with the building’s past.
Accessibility: All exhibition spaces, the conference hall, the library, the bar and the shop are also accessible to all persons with disabilities. Disabled access is available to all floors by lift.
Španski Borci Cultural Centre
Address: Zaloška 61Ljubljana, Slovenia
Španski borci Culture Centre re-opened in November 2009 in the Ljubljana-Moste neighbourhood of the city. Run by En-Knap Productions, the centre represents the largest facility intended for cultural activities in Slovenia managed by a non-governmental organisation. Providing a much-needed performing space in Ljubljana as well as two rehearsal spaces, the centre's programme focuses on stage arts, however, it also covers the areas of music, visual arts, literature, and offers a children's programme. The centre also includes a reading room, mediatheque, coffee shop and gallery.
Accessibility: The main hall of the venue is fully accessible while the small hall is not accessible for wheelchair users. To use the lift, please contact the Box Office, otherwise one of our hostesses will be happy to assist you.
Maribor
Vetrinjski dvor
Address: Vetrinjska ulica 30, Maribor
Vetrinjski dvor is a multifunctional event, exhibition and production space, primarily intended for the implementation of programmes of non-governmental cultural organisations. It is an environment that supports the ideas of local actors and their mutual and international integration, that encourages the cooperation of creators and producers and that is based on (mutual) self-help and do-it-yourself mentality. Vetrinjski dvor therefore has a double life. The exhibition hall and atrium (and occasionally another project room) function as a cultural venue, which is available on a project basis to cultural producers and on the other hand to private cultural organisations and initiatives as well as independent creators in the field of culture and cultural industries, enabling spatial and also technical conditions for operation and by agreement also consulting and support in production.
Accessibility: The venue is wheelchair accessible (upstairs is accessible with elevator). The venue also has wheelchair accessible toilets.
Intimni Oder, GT22
Address: Glavni trg 22, Maribor
Intimni Oder’s key mission is the production and development of independent theatre. They strive to make as many people as possible familiar with contemporary performance practices, make them get to know them and deal with them critically. Projects are created through research, testing, learning and (self)criticism in search of possibilities and abilities of expression. Their main activities are regular production and post-production of performances, organisation and implementation of training, workshops, education and contents of culture-art education, as well as organisation of the biennial international Prestopi/Crossings Festival. They connect art with society and society with art. In Maribor, the Intimni Oder has been growing in the common spaces of GT22 since 2014.
Accessibility: Intimni Oder is located within the GT22 venue and is not accessible for wheelchair users as the entrance has steps. GT22 is wheelchair accessible but the toilets are not.

Flixbus operates in Slovenia. You can plan your bus journey on AP Ljubljana, AP Maribor, Rome2Rio or GetByBus.
Ljubljana Bus Station is located here, just next to the main railway station at the north of the city centre.

Car pooling
If you choose to drive to Ljubljana, don’t forget to ask other participants if they want to share a ride by posting on our Forum. Ljubljana has direct connections to the European motorway networks, making it easy to get to and from most European cities.
GoOpti is a shared car service from a specific location to the airport or the other way around. It serves several cities across Italy, Croatia, Austria and Slovenia and can be used for a ride to reach Ljubljana.
By car
As the city centre is mainly for pedestrians, please note that Ljubljana can be a difficult city to drive and park in. Public parking in Ljubljana is managed by the public company Javno podjetje Ljubljanska parkirišča in tržnice. In the city centre, short-time parking is allowed in the short-term parking zone. Parking fee can be paid at a parking metre, a ticket machine, an Urbanomat machine or by using the Urbana SMS Parking service.
The other parking option is using P+R facilities (car parks with connections to public bus services). The closest one to the centre where most events are taking place is Ljubljana Barje, the cost is €1,20 per day and has to be paid through Urbana.
At Ljubljana's P+R (park-and-ride) facilities, you can leave your vehicle and transfer to a city bus for a journey to the city centre. With the purchase of a parking ticket, you get two bus tickets valid for the day of the parking ticket purchase.
P+R parking facilities:
- Dolgi most P+R (car park for vehicles arriving in Ljubljana from the direction of the coast)
- Stožice Sports Park P+R (parking garage for vehicles entering the city from the north, north-west or north-east)
- Studenec P+R (parking garage for vehicles entering the city from the east)
- Ježica P+R (car park for vehicles arriving in Ljubljana from the north and east)
- Barje P+R (car park for vehicles arriving in Ljubljana from the south)
- There are several parking options available close to the city centre, you can check their prices and availability here.
We recommend checking with your hotel if they offer free parking.
Parking in Maribor is possible in gated parking spaces or white public zones. Check locations and prices for both options on the attached links.

Ljubljana Airport Jože Pučnik is located in Brnik, 25km away from the city centre. You can view the airport’s location here.
There are a number of bus lines and shuttle services connecting Ljubljana’s airport and the city centre. You can find more information here. There are shuttle services you can book at the arrivals hall upon exiting.

Slovenia is part of the European Union's Schengen Agreement, which means that you do not need to show your national ID card or passport when you are travelling to or from Slovenia from another Schengen EU country. It is still recommended to bring a valid passport or ID card with you in case you need to prove your identity. Some airline operators still require you to present a passport even for travels within the Schengen area.
If you travel to Slovenia from outside the Schengen agreement area, you may require a visa. Check here the list of countries for which a visa to enter Slovenia is required.
Upon arrival, please make sure that you have a proof of hotel reservation or a letter indicating you are being hosted by a friend or family member.
If you need an invitation letter to apply for a visa, please register for the meeting first and then contact barbara@glej.si
The currency used in Slovenia is the Euro. Bank cards are common across Slovenia, with Visa, Mastercard, and American Express widely accepted. Visa is more popular in Slovenia than Mastercard and is more likely to work in all ATMs. Smaller venues and shops may only accept cash.
Bank and exchange offices are located in the city centre close to the hotels, and cash points accepting major credit cards are conveniently located all over the city.
Please be aware that local COVID-19 regulations may affect your journey as well as the Caravan until the very last minute.
As of October 2023, all COVID-19 entry restrictions have been lifted. When entering Slovenia, foreign citizens will not be required to show a negative PCR test, a rapid antigen test, proof of recovery or a vaccination certificate, regardless of which country they come from.
Nevertheless, the general advice from the Slovenian health authorities should still be followed, and general infection prevention recommendations should be taken into account. We recommend that you regularly check the latest regulations and requirements leading up to your trip.
For the latest information on COVID-19 travel regulations, please check the official governmental information here.
Make sure to also check if there are any restrictions when returning to your home country from Slovenia. If you travel by land, COVID-19 entry restrictions may differ depending on the countries that you cross. For an updated overview of the regulations in place around the globe, check here.
Emergency numbers
Emergency (Ambulance and fire fighting service): 112
Hospital emergency: 112
Police: 113
For all emergency numbers, state at the outset your location and the location of the person in danger.
In addition to the precautions we take to make the impact of the Caravan on the environment as low as possible, we ask you to also contribute by following these tips:
- Switch off your computer and your smartphone when they are not in use.
- Connect to the venue’s public Wi-Fi instead of your 3G/4G data if possible.
- Avoid disposable tableware whenever possible and bring your own tote bag to shops and grocery stores.
- Sort your waste according to the instructions at the Caravan venues and throughout the city if possible.
- Bring your own water bottle and reusable coffee mug to spare the environment the plastic and yourself the money.
- Refill your bottle. Tap water in Ljubljana is completely safe to drink. We recommend that you fill up your water bottle in the morning at your hotel, and do refills during the day. You can do so in the bathroom at the meeting venues.
