In the city
Luxembourg City has engaged outstanding efforts to become barrier-free and accessible to all people with disabilities, which has been rewarded with the European Union Access City Awards 2022. For an overview of the accessible offer in Luxembourg, click here.
It’s also worth downloading the EureWelcome app, which includes accessibility details to navigate the city, as well as a search engine for accessible accommodation, attractions and facilities.
Luxembourg’s pavements are a tale of two halves. On the one hand, modern areas like Kirchberg in Luxembourg City have smooth paving, high-visibility crosswalks, pedestrian signals, tactile guides for the visually impaired, convenient dips in the pavement and accessible crossings. Large portions of the UNESCO-protected Ville Haute city centre have been made accessible, with cement sidewalks and curb ramps.
On the other hand, historic districts across the country have picturesque cobblestones with a less favourable environment for wheelchair users. The Grund district presents the most accessibility challenges for wheelchair users where cobblestoned streets lacking sidewalks entirely, uneven pavements and elevated levels are common. The squares in the city centre, Place Guillaume II and Place d’Armes, are easy to manage despite well-worn sidewalks. In certain areas, sidewalks may be broken or cracked. This doesn’t usually make a sidewalk unusable, but it’s important to watch out for potholes. Crossing signals are installed at high traffic intersections, but many low-traffic side streets are not signal controlled. Always watch for oncoming traffic before crossing the street.

At the meeting
It is our aim to make IETM Luxembourg Focus as accessible as possible. However, it may not be possible to offer services at every location, and we therefore recommend that you check each location of your interest.
The accessibility of each venue will be uploaded upon confirmation of the full programme.
All accessibility details provided online are collected based on the information received from the venues' staff and their websites. If you need more information, you can get in touch with venues directly.
There will be a range of accessibility services available at the meeting. As we have budget restrictions and are dependent on the local infrastructure, we cannot always guarantee that the conditions will be the same from one meeting to another.
Nevertheless, for this meeting we are able to:
- Offer free registration for your support worker;
- Send you a large print version of the programme;
- Provide speech-to-text captions for all plenary sessions of the meeting programme – details of these services will be available online upon confirmation of the full programme;
- Ensure that the main venue hosting the working programme and most venues hosting artistic performances are wheelchair accessible.
If you have any questions about the accessibility at IETM Luxembourg Focus Meeting, please get in touch with us by writing to francisca.salgueiro@ietm.org.

Cycling
In Luxembourg City, the company Vel’oh offers self-service bicycles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Users can therefore move easily in the Luxembourg capital. Véloh stations are now equipped with electric bikes. The City of Luxembourg is thus the first European city to be equipped with electric bicycles. This is much appreciated on the climbs of the Grund, leaving from neimënster.
Booking: The Vel’oh bike-sharing system only works with subscriptions. For a short period consisting of one to three days, tickets can be purchased directly at the Vel’oh terminal. The first half hour of each trip is free and once these 30 minutes are over, the service becomes payable by the hour (1€/hour and 5€ maximum per day).
Taxi
Official cabs must have a cab zone sign prominently displayed on their windshield. A cab driver cannot refuse a short trip. However, he can refuse a long distance trip or a trip abroad.
Price range: Each cab is free to apply its own rates. However, he is required to clearly display his rates on the outside of the car on the rear passenger side and inside the front of the car. The prices are between 11€ and 22€ for 5 kilometres.
Webtaxi
Created in 2012, Webtaxi quickly became popular in Luxembourg. The company has more than 150 taxis and offers 3 fleets of vehicles: eco, van and limo. When booking a Webtaxi, the reservation system announces the price of the trip before you confirm. The price displayed is also a guaranteed price: there are no additional costs in the event of a problem (traffic jams, diversions, etc.) and you arrive at your destination without any unpleasant surprises. Learn more about Webtaxi here.
Hellotaxi
Luxembourg also has an Uber type alternative to get around the country with the HelloTaxi.lu. You can directly book a car driven by independent drivers who however hold a valid cab licence. Via the corresponding app, you can also follow its arrival on your smartphone thanks to the GPS location. The prices charged should be lower than the prices of traditional cabs. Learn more about Hellotaxi here.

In addition to the precautions we take to make the impact of the Focus on the environment as gentle as possible, we ask you to also contribute by following these tips:
- Switch off your computer and your smartphone when they are not in use;
- Connect to the venue’s public Wi-Fi instead of your 3G/4G data if possible;
- Avoid disposable tableware whenever possible and bring your own tote bag to shops and grocery stores;
- Sort your waste according to the instructions at the Focus venues and throughout the city if possible. In Luxembourg, waste is currently sorted in mixed residual waste (grey bins), organic waste (brown bins), paper/cardboard (blue bins) and glass (green bins). You can find more information about the sorting rules in Luxembourg here;
- Recycle bottles and cans. In Luxembourg, you pay a deposit each time you buy drinks in cans or bottles with a deposit mark. You get your deposit back by returning empty cans and bottles using the reversed vending machines located in grocery stores. Some public bins in the city also have a platform, where you can leave your bottle or can for someone else to pick up;
- Bring your own water bottle and reusable coffee mug to spare the environment the plastic and yourself the money;
- Refill your bottle. Tap water in Luxembourg is completely safe to drink. We recommend that you fill up your water bottle in the morning at your hotel, and do refills during the day. You can do so in the bathroom at the meeting venues.
