This first Focus Meeting has been built around 3 workshops in which participants will go through different key learning processes to develop fairer practices for their own contexts.
This introduction will set the goals of our workshop and hopefully shift our reflection towards action, engaging us in a meaningful and nuanced transformation of our ways of working.

Many of us have been confronted with professional situations which are unfair. And most of us have already undertaken actions to improve and push towards fairer conditions in our local contexts.

During our first workshop, we will split up in working groups to share and map our most urgent issues regarding fair practices and discuss good practices we have observed or tried out.

This session has been conceived by Ingrid Vranken, Independent Dramaturg, Curator and Artist based in Brussels and will be led by a group of moderators.

It is difficult to speak about fairness in the arts without speaking of precariousness, pressures, solidarity and the sustainability of our practices.

We don’t always have the freedom to do the right thing but out of necessity, sometimes, we are able to reshuffle some pieces of the puzzle around to place our values at the centre of our working models.

We have invited the Brussels based artist and activist Anna Rispoli to share her thoughts on solidarity and to open our afternoon with an inspiring example.

Taking a step back from our own organisations and practices, this second workshop will be an opportunity for us to take a deep dive into specific case studies of fair practices, taken from different contexts.

In our working groups we will look into these fair practice examples, analyse and discuss them and identify our learnings.

KVS BOX

KVS BOX

Address: Arduinkaai 7 Quai aux Pierres de Taille 1000 Brussels | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

Performance in French with surtitles.

Désintégration Culturelle – written, created and choreographed by Nadine Baboy – questions identity, heritage and cultural membership in a cosmopolitan society.

Prepare for a vivid, dynamic performance - no sitting back in your plush seat - as the audience becomes completely immersed in the universe Nadine and her performers create. The show takes you on a journey in which poetry, music and dance intermingle and through this mix of styles a modern vision of hybridisation emerges.

After the succesful premiere of Désintégration Culturelle at KVS, we are reprising the performance on popular demand. Due to its particular audience setup, capacity for this performance is limited – so grab your tickets early!

Nadine Baboy is a Belgian-Congolese artist with a passion for performance. As a dancer, choreographer, actor and poet, she takes inspiration from artistic and cultural cross-over. She has previously worked on various dance theatre projects that blend movement and word,  including KVS and la Monnaie’s musical L’Homme de La Mancha. Her passion for dance translates into a fusion between hip hop, dancehall and contemporary afro-styles. Her powerful texts broach striking themes and link her African roots to her European base.

Genre: Dance, Theatre

Duration: 60 min

Price: €10-20

The Participatory and Immersive Creation group (PIC) aims to provide a space for IETM members to tackle central issues we have in creating, presenting and producing this genre of work, through open discussions, experience sharing, and creative exchanges.

On this occasion, and in the framework of the Focus Brussels gathering’s main topic of “Fair Enough?”, we will facilitate a discussion on the issues of legacy and impact of artistic and cultural work on the territories and communities in which we are involved.

Simón Adinia Hanukai, Artistic Director of Kaimera Productions, and Isadora Bigazzi of Effetto Larsen, will lead this interactive session that aims to interrogate our role within the social system we collaborate in.

During our last session, all the inspiration we could gather from our colleagues will find its culmination point. Either individually or with co-workers, we will create prototypes for how our organisation/ practice could look like when implementing a fair practice principle or example.

These prototypes will be shared in small feedback groups, where we will help each other in to identify the first steps we can take towards these futures.

Another important moment to check in with all the groups and highlight important notions of the last two days. This time, we are inviting the people who have carried us through this two day reflection to react and share some insights about what they have heard in their respective groups.

There will also be time for participants' reactions and of course, we will also take a moment to say goodbye and share the latest details about IETM’s future activities.

BRDCST Festival

Ancienne Belgique

Ancienne Belgique

Address: Arduinkaai 7 Quai aux Pierres de Taille 1000 Brussels | Event Map | Venue Accessibility

For our first IETM Focus Meeting in Brussels, we have tried to go beyond our usual performing arts programme recommendations and have chosen to also share relevant cultural activities from other disciplines.

BRDCST showcases the best of avant-garde pop, futuristic hip-hop, grime, African black metal, Chicago footwork, jazz, electronic music, contemporary classical, improv and more.

Saturday’s line-up could not be more diverse. The Japanese FUJI|||||||||||TA makes the organ hip again, while Bitchin Bajas pay tribute to the jazz god Sun Ra with Switched On Ra, and Londoner Wu-Lu performs his unique blend of grunge, post-punk, dub and rap. Violinist Elisabeth Klinck and cellist Judith Hamann will also administer a healthy dose of experimental music. Christina Vantzou gets audiences dreaming away with music that floats between post-classical, ambient and experimental. Electronica producer Hiro Kone produces an impressive blend of sound design, neoclassical, spoken word and mutant techno. You can dance away to M I M I‘s Afrofuturist DJ sets filled with jungle, UK bass and garage. Furthermore, Circuit des Yeux comes to BRDCST with her magnificent album -io. She will leave no soul unmoved.

Désintégration culturelle (Nadine Baboy / Citylab Pianofabriek & KVS)

KVS BOX

KVS BOX

Address: Arduinkaai 7 Quai aux Pierres de Taille 1000 Brussels | Event Map | Venue Accessibility
