A certain Braided History - Sarah Chase Dance StoriesAgora de la danse
POETICS OF MEMORY. Both a dancer of stories and a storyteller in motion, the Toronto choreographer Sarah Chase often speaks as she dances, with the narrative evolving through both speech and movement. She gently and intimately crafts a poetics of memory that is linked to childhood memory, conjuring up her parents or next-door neighbours as she spins her tales of sensitive, emotive experiences, projecting everyday life into a place of enchantment. Watching her pieces is like leafing through a sketchbook of a life rich in anecdotes and observations, of stories and fables recounted as she dances. She dismantles the sheen of movement in order to capture, in the flow of dancing that appears to be nonchalant but which is full of affect, a few precious fragments of reality. With A Certain Braided History, a duo created with Andrea Nann that traces the story of their belated friendship, and The Disappearance of Right and Left, which she choreographed for her former teacher Peggy Baker, she has opened up to a great inner truth of the transient body and the lightness of being. Far from current trends in choreography, these “miniatures” are exquisite pearls of disarming simplicity, mischievous and malicious. Conceived and directed by Sarah chase COLLIER DE PERLES.

FAMILY VIVARIUM. If the beating of a butterfly’s wings can beget tornadoes thousands of miles away, our relationships with our immediate and extended family, as well as our history and memory, are directly linked to our ecosystem. This is certainly the case in the eyes of Daniel Brooks and Chris Abraham. The Eco Show, an examination of one family’s history that contains multiple drawers and false bottoms, is an ecological fable that takes a humorous look at the home environment of human beings and how they relate to other members of their species. In an era when the environment and ecology are front-page news, Hamm and his family are studied in their threatened natural habitat, and the picture is far from rosy. Connected with significant productions such as The Lorca Play, Insomnia, Cul-de-sac and Half Life, all of which were previously presented at the FTA, Brooks has joined forces with rising star Chris Abraham for the new opus of Necessary Angel Theatre Company, itself home to a group of artists who are convinced that theatre is a social and profoundly political art providing essential entertainment for a world hovering on the brink of the abyss. Written by Daniel brooks VIVARIUM FAMILIAL. SHAMELESS WEDDING FEAST. Like Shakespeare, Patricia Allio believes that we are such stuff as dreams are made on. Based on the works of the American punk and queer writer Kathy Acker, she has created a dream object, a protean project that is part theatre, part concert and part film. Life is but a dream # 1 is freely adapted from the sharp audacity of Acker’s novel Blood and Guts in High School and enriched by material collected in New York City. A multidisciplinary artist, Allio prolongs the subversive spirit of the chic destroy icon of the alternative New York scene of the 1990s, who was renowned for her skilled manipulation of plagiarized texts and rewritings of classic novels. Set in a post-apocalyptic world marked by revolution, Allio’s performance is in constant mutation. The language of theatre is interspersed with images, as short films are an inherent part of the piece. In erasing the boundary between truth and fiction, in combining visual poetry and theatre and achieving a mutual fertilization between mythology and realism, the notion of genre becomes porous. Her performance art is dominated by hybridity, and in that respect Allio and Acker are blood sisters, with their onstage nuptials taking on an allure of a shameless wedding feast. Based On “Blood And Guts In High School” By Kathy Acker NOCES IMPUDIQUES.

ENJOY THE SHOW! Obscene? No, lucid. The choreographer Dave St-Pierre is neither a provocateur nor an old-fashioned romantic. Moving between discipline and chaos, this troublemaker likes to disrupt stage conventions in destroy and trash fashion, playing with kitschy mockery and sly sentimentalism in order to flush out some disturbing truths about how we view love and tenderness. While never shying away from highly charged imagery, nakedness or grotesque cross-dressing, nothing is gratuitous. In Un peu de tendresse, the second part (after La Pornographie des âmes) of his trilogy Sociologie et autres utopies contemporaines, St-Pierre portrays the emotionally handicapped who, like drowning men, cling to a life raft that fell into the deep with them. His staging catapults some twenty dancers/actors – bearded, naked men, drag queens in blonde wigs and women wearing synthetic dresses – into an extreme confrontation with exhaustion. Venturing far from convention and dogma, the dance theatre of Dave St-Pierre is full of searing intensity and desolation, making of performance a raw, edgy portrayal. With the assistance of Eugénie Beaudry, Enrica Boucher, Geneviève Bélanger, Luc Boissonnault, Emmanuelle Bourassa-Beaudoin, Julie Carrier, Karina Champoux, Francis Ducharme, Silke Grabinger, Renaud Lacelle-Bourdon, Sarah Lefebvre, Alexis Lefebvre, Simon-Xavier Lefebvre, Camille Loiselle-D'Aragon, Gabriel Lessard, Julie Perron, Eve Pressault-Chalifoux, Aude Rioland, Eric Robidoux, Sophie Dalès ENJOY THE SHOW! En collaboration avec Eugénie Beaudry, Enrica Boucher, Geneviève Bélanger, Luc Boissonnault, Emmanuelle Bourassa-Beaudoin, Julie Carrier, Karina Champoux, Francis Ducharme, Silke Grabinger, Renaud Lacelle-Bourdon, Sarah Lefebvre, Alexis Lefebvre, Simon-Xavier Lefebvre, Camille Loiselle-D'Aragon, Gabriel Lessard, Julie Perron, Eve Pressault-Chalifoux, Aude Rioland, Eric Robidoux, Sophie Dalès

VANQUISHING DEATH. Frankenstein, a cold-blooded icon suffused with terror. Never in the history of humanity have we ever been so close to the myth, for we are at the beginning of a new era, where reshaping and remaking the body is widespread, a game of combinations where the frontiers between people and things, between beings and matter, will gradually dissolve. Founded in September 1993, Le Pont Bridge is a multidisciplinary creative cell. In tune with technology and adopting an adaptable and inventive approach, under artistic director Carole Nadeau the group creates urban legends that act on the spectator's senses and perception in pieces that combine theatre, installation art and video, and that explore the connections between words, the body, space and image. A playful theatrical collage that mixes multimedia with a “thrilleresque” approach that evokes the cloning and experimentation of genetic manipulation, Frank Ketchup questions our desire to remain human and takes a humorous look at the new power of the biosciences, which will drastically change our ways of thinking and of relating to each other, transforming our intimate thoughts and psychological bearings. Frankenstein was a myth, but Frank Ketchup exists. He's already here. Assistant director: Louis hudon TUER LA MORT.

CHRYSALIS OF CONNECTION. In 1999, Laurentio, a hunter from the Igloolik region in Nunavut who is also a storyteller, actor and Inuit dancer, met the dancer, improviser and performer Geneviève, who wished to build bridges and stage art forms that unite northern theatrical practice with her own. Uqquaq, L’Abri (The Shelter) is the tale of a cultural and personal encounter. While a documentary video is being projected, they begin to build a tent that will provide them with shelter. Like two caterpillars spinning a cocoon, Geneviève and Laurentio are themselves strands of cotton, bits of sealskin and wool, creating their own chrysalis. Their shelter is the site of their coming together, a place marked by cohabitating codes and legends. It combines an encounter with modern dance, a story told in Inuktitut and a drum dance sequence, with moments where she covers a structure made of ropes with skeins of wool as he prepares a sealskin rope that serves as the basis of their shelter. An impure, hybrid presentation that mixes and intertwines cultures, practices and sensibilities, Uqquaq, L’Abri is an incredible antidote to trepidation and selfishness. Created, conceived and performed by Geneviève pepin, Laurentio q. Arnatsiaq TISSER DES LIENS.

AN ACTIVIST IN BODY AND SOUL. Inspired by Susan Sontag’s book Regarding the Pain of Others, Lia Rodrigues’ Incarnat is a piece presented in bright vivid red, a work that questions the nature of our relationship toward the suffering of others. A choreographer and founder of the Festival Panorama Rio Arte Dança, Lia Rodrigues has made her mark on the Brazilian stage with her political commitment and her work with the poor and the disadvantaged. Her company gives performances of her pieces (a mélange of the plastic arts, dance and performance art) in isolated, remote regions of Brazil. Like the essay that initially inspired the piece, Incarnat is a plea for involvement and commitment. Given the risk inherent in our era that frequent exposure to scenes of violence will lead to an indifference toward all sorts of brutality, Lia Rodrigues – incisive, almost furious and incredibly invigorating – demolishes our expedient convictions, bluntly questions our attitudes and positions, and forces us to look at ourselves and others as human, very human, beings. choreography: Lia rodrigues MILITANTE CORPS ET ÂME.

GHOULISH JESTERS. Short philosophical tales, stories that are silly and amusing or that touch the collective imagination, comical playlets, funny, satirical fables in verse and stirring, moralist comedies are all part of Famous Puppet Death Scenes. These gems are taken from the repertoire of puppetry and all deal with death, with death viewed as either desperate or invigorating. Scenes are presented as dumb shows or are tied together by narration, with the puppeteers sometimes hidden and at other times in full view. With a puppet as master of ceremonies, the miniature puppet theatre gives rise to multiple possibilities and is transformed into the theatre of our fleeting human condition, a touching portrayal of our poor mortal selves. The work of this Alberta theatre company has drawn inspiration from the traditions of many cultures, creating an anthology of naive and sophisticated pieces that can be poetical or lyrical, of solemn beauty or unbridled fantasy. All styles are evoked, from Jewish humour and metaphor to philosophical tales entwined with enigmatic fables. Never lugubrious or bleak, all the scenes have as their theme death, or rather life. After all, life is a fatal disease and we’re hanging on by a thread! Created and conceived by The Old Trout Puppet Workshop & Friends: Peter Balkwill, Don Brinsmead, Mitchell Craib, Pityu Kenderes, Bobby Hall, Judd Palmer, Stephen Pearce And Tim Sutherland GUIGNOLS MACABRES.

Lipsynch - Ex Machina/Théâtre Sans FrontièresSalle Pierre-Mercure
CHORUS FOR NINE VOICES. A fabulous soap opera that flirts with both the saga of our planet and the ideas of physicist Stephen Hawking, Lipsynch proposes a series of alternate destinies, of superimposed lives and voices, in fact nothing less than an inventory of the world with its absences and its black holes, seen through the ups and downs of men and women brought together by chance and probability. Nine stories are linked together, the rules of chronology are abolished and microfictions bump into each other like marbles in a pinball machine activated by the conjurer Lepage. After Les Sept Branches de la rivière Ota and many other monumental works, he takes us by boat, train, jet, subway and car to the confluence where several rivers meet, to the delta where the alluvial deposits of grief-stricken memory lie. A dramatic and farcical work, at the heart of this symphony each story and each character is introduced like an instrument with its own special music and tonality. Lipsynch is a huge Meccano set that takes theatre to the summit of its narrative possibilities, a shimmering, multi-sided Rubik’s cube that suggests that something new might suddenly appear. Directed By Robert Lepage CHOEUR À NEUF VOIX. INCREDIBLE PHANTASMAGORIAS. In three striking technological presentations, the brilliant illusionist Denis Marleau orchestrates a voyage to the land of absence. The journey takes the audience into a world where three tiny beings perched on high bring a bizarre story of children to life, children lost in an undefined place, their dreams shifting from the past to the present, between existence and its opposite. Then the audience moves, plunging into vaudeville that is devoid of slamming doors and lovers hiding in closets, venturing into a Beckett-like variation of the husband-wife-mistress trio that reveals the solitude of individuals by portraying the ridiculous aspects of life and love as we feel our way forward in total darkness. Then twelve faces suddenly appear in the darkness. They gaze at nothing, however, for they are all blind. Abandoned in a dark forest, they await their guide, who does not show up. Together for the first time in Montreal, these technological shows leave, each in its own fashion, a lasting memory that is produced by the actors, who dazzle by their absence. Far from conventional theatre standards in a world that freely mixes performance and technology, this outstanding work leaves the audience stranded in a land of ghosts. Dors Mon Petit Enfant :15 Min Comédie: 25 Min Les aveugles: 45 Min Conceived And Directed By Denis Marleau FANTASMAGORIES HALLUCINANTES. Famous Puppet Death Scenes - The Old Trout Puppet WorkshopM-N - Studio Hydro-Québec

Famous Puppet Death Scenes - The Old Trout Puppet WorkshopM-N - Studio Hydro-Québec
HUMAN TIDE. Dance that absolutely asserts itself as dance. Dance that is unadorned and rigorous. Dance that is an allegorical ocean, powerful and unfathomable, with violent, tempestuous movements and tremendous silences. Daniel Léveillé’s latest work Crépuscule des océans (Twilight of the Oceans) invites the audience to follow the ebb and flow of a human tide, exploring its depths and our dark side. Staunchly opposed to divisions and barriers, Léveillé flees at the approach of an ensnaring net or any effort to reduce his work to a single desire. “I dream of a performance that is fluid and not fixed, not frozen dead in a definitive form.” After Amour, acide et noix (2001) and La Pudeur des icebergs (2004), is he pursuing a triptych? Then again, why be burdened with categories and classifications? With his disregard for convention and his rigorous approach, he creates dance that escapes all attempts to define and classify. “I never know what I’m working on. I do everything I can to not know what I’m doing, responding instead to instinct and the subconscious. My ideal is to have me, the creative artist, fade into the background and disappear.” Such effacing nonetheless leaves an indelible trace in the consciousness of audiences carried away by the dynamic dance he creates.

XXXXX... A Situation for dancing - Antonija Livingstone/Heather KravasThéatre La Chapelle
DANCE AND DISOBEDIENCE. Four evenings. Four different dance performances that can be viewed singly or as a whole. A dance to all four points of the compass where movements are echoed and repeated. The four winds blow through this four-star work with four eyes taking a bold, hard gaze at clichés about women. The Vancouver dancer and performer Antonija Livingstone, who has danced for Benoît Lachambre and Meg Stuart, among others, has teamed up with the New York choreographer and performer Heather Kravas for a cynical waltz in quadruple time that is hair-raising, provocative, unsettling and playful. It marries dance with a brass band and a chamber orchestra, has a couple embrace both onstage and in the audience and puts a stepladder together with a man who rains small bits of paper down onto the stage. As abolitionists, the two artists are situationists who use dance to attack the prevailing ideology, replacing it with poetry, celebration and play. They demonstrate how traditional models are perpetuated in a performance where institutions and individuals play their assigned roles. And what a thrill to smash that structure to pieces, in four-four time! Created And Performed By Antonija Livingstone, Heather Kravas DANSE ET DÉSOBÉISSANCE. Quatre soirées. Quatre spectacles. Conception Et Interprétation : Antonija Livingstone, Heather Kravas |

Hey Girl! - Socìetas Raffaello SanzioUsine C
A NEW EVE. Theatre of the subconscious revealed, theatre that draws its inspiration from the founding myths of Western culture and theatre where science, sound composition and visual arts are inextricably linked, the theatre of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio assails those who dare stare it in the face, stirring up passions and provoking either discomfort or total adherence. After Orestea and Genesi, presented at the FTA in 1997 and 2002 respectively, after having explored new incarnations of tragedy on several stages all over the world, Romeo Castellucci, a major artist of our time, is back with Hey Girl!, an astounding piece in which “someone wakes up, gets out of bed and gets ready to go out”. From a viscous chrysalis emerges a future Eve. She evokes those “queens who lost their heads for the people”, plays a Juliette with no Romeo, sprinkles a sword with Chanel No. 5, drapes herself in a shroud bearing the mark of the cross, and meets her black double. All these evocative images are projected onto the stage of a female-focused theatre where anonymous males arrive in a pack and engage in a street fight. A work that celebrates the end of an era for women and the beginning of a new age, a piece where the text is scraped down to the bone, an echo chamber of boundless resonance, Hey Girl! provokes the surprise of a falling meteor. By Romeo Castellucci ÈVE NOUVELLE.
