If the situation is desperate enough then a mother will eat her young, said Baba Yaga.

Battle lines are drawn across 400 years, from Glasgow to Russia, as two families prepare to become one. This audio promenade leads audiences through streets and hidden spaces of Glasgow, as Poorboy bring their world of rituals, fairytale and the dark corners of family, music, soundscape, smells, and their curation of visual art, photography and film.

This is the story of how medical services try to repair the physical damage, how his mother tries to keep him safe, and how Wee Andy tries to imagine a life for himself in a world bordered by four local streets.

Artistic city trip

Various places

Excursion

Various places

Tour 1- The University of Glasgow to Park Quadrant
Do you remember that scene in the Buster Keaton film ‘Steamboat Bill, Jr?’ There are storm clouds in the air. It starts to rain. A single sheet of newspaper flies through the air. The storm gets stronger. People are running away, they flee the city. The roof of the hospital is lifted off and we see him… we see Buster.

Tour 2 – CCA to Hill Street, Garnethill
Establishment shot. A beautiful wide view over the city, it’s Paris of course, I imagine it does look over Paris. Though I can’t see any specific landmarks. There’s also two spires just there. Maybe it doesn’t have to be specifically Paris. A camera looks out over... a city at morning. Let’s keep it non-specific. A morning, lamppost, a cityscape in the mist. Classic.

Tour 3 – The Arches to Broomielaw, Commerce St Bridge
Diane Keaton: Isn’t it beautiful out?
Woody Allen: Yeah it’s really so so pretty when the light starts to come up.
Diane Keaton: I know I love it.
Woody Allen: Boy this is really a great city I don’t care what anybody says. It’s just really a knockout you know?

These performative tours will meet participants at venues around the city and lead them to sites that remind the tour guide of significant moments from classic movies. In an attempt to transform these everyday locations into sites of romantic and cinematic beauty, we can cast the city as one huge film set and the site of many converging narratives.

Artistic city trip - Not the Ivory Tower

University of Glasgow

Excursion : Pas la tour d'Ivoire

University of Glasgow

The School of Culture and Creative Arts welcomes IETM delegates to Not the Ivory Tower at the University of Glasgow. A specially commissioned guided walk of our ancient University, led by two of our doctoral students (and professional practitioners), is followed by a symposium which explores, through various current examples, the ways in which a University is able to engage with, support, and influence the cultural activities of a city. In these financially challenging times, collaboration and creative partnerships across sectors are all the more vital. Contributors include Professor Nick Pearce (Head of the School of CCA), Professor Adrienne Scullion (Research Lead on Pantomime in Scotland), Dr. Dominic Paterson (Curator and Art critic), Dr. Nick Fells (Scottish Opera, Red Note Ensemble, and Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra), Jackie Wylie (Artistic Director of Arches and PhD supervisor for Collaborative Doctoral Award), and David Overend (Collaborative Doctoral Award student, with the Arches and Glasgow University).

Film Screening of “There is a Place” followed by presentation and discussion The China-UK Connections through Culture (CtC) initiative offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to cultural organisations in China and the UK, to build long lasting relationships and develop cultural collaborations between the two countries. Development grants help UK organisations to develop projects with their partners in China, and increase visibility of projects. One exciting outcome of this cross-cultural collaboration has resulted in a co-commission(*) between Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, Goat Media Ltd and Dance House. Sang Jijia – a Tibetan dancer/choreographer based in China - visited Scotland in May of this year and spent six days with Katrina McPherson and Simon Fides at their home in Glenferness. During this time they filmed ‘There is a Place’, a seven minute dance film with soundtrack by Philip Jeck. This screening at IETM is a preview of ' There is a Place', which will be premiered in Hong Kong in November 2010 at the 4th Jumping Frames International Dance Video Festival before going on tour to other screendance festivals. The screening will include an introduction from McPherson, who will be joined afterwards by other Scottish dance professionals involved in the China CtC project - giving a fascinating and varied perspective on their individual experiences.

Human animal - Janis Claxton Dance

Human animal - Janis Claxton Dance

Platform

Human Animal is a unique performance installation recently performed at the Shanghai Expo and in Beijing 798 Space. This work, inspired by the award winning performance Enclosure 44 – Humans (2008) is a moving installation which challenges perceptions of “who's watching who”. Human Animal exposes audiences and performers to the intrinsic evolutionary complicity between humans and animals.

In a world of high unemployment, state surveillance and fierce repression, the young get their kicks from random violence. Alex is with his gang of droogs, hyping them up for their nightly orgy of opportunistic brutality. But our charismatic delinquent narrator isn’t a straightforward psychopath. As we follow his rehabilitation by the state we are left wondering if being forced to be good is in fact more evil than sin itself.

It’s Midsummer’s weekend in Edinburgh. It’s raining. Two thirtysomethings are sitting in a New Town bar waiting for something to turn up. He’s a failing car salesman on the fringes of the city’s underworld and she’s a high powered divorce lawyer with a taste for other people’s husbands. She’s out of his league and he’s not her type at all. They absolutely should not sleep together. Ever. Ever.

Midsummer [a play with songs] is the story of Bob and Helena and a great lost weekend of bridge burning, car chases, wedding bust-ups, bondage miscalculations, midnight trysts and horrible hungover self loathing misery. Featuring Cora Bissett and Matthew Pidgeon as the ill-advised love match, Midsummer is a quirky, charming love story by one of Scotland’s leading playwrights, David Greig and top Edinburgh singer/songwriter, Gordon McIntyre of the band ballboy.

Orlando opens with the hero as a young man in Elizabethan England, and follows his transformations of fortune, love and gender in this sensuous epic of self-discovery. Cryptic performances seek to ‘ravish the senses’, fusing performance, live music, visuals and technology, enabling ‘music to be looked at…not just listened to’. “I tied my heart to the oak tree.”

Takes a humorous look at entertainment through the lens of post-modern dance. Playing with certain associations and expectations suggested by the title word, ’Musical’ is not entertaining per se but is rather about entertainment and self-amusement. Taking elements from historical music hall theatre, the performance presents a tension between kitsch and minimalist aesthetics.

An Advocate for all Reasons

RSAMD

Un plaidoyer pour toutes les causes

RSAMD

We need to talk, to listen, to share and understand. We bear a torch to enlighten and prepare. We carry a burden that, to many is invisible. We are artists, creatives, thinkers and enablers We are the ones that shape the cup that holds the thing we call civilization.
As global culture continues to diversify in fractal like complexity. Our changing world view slips further from our grasp as individuals. Our understanding of the core values of creativity and it’s impact on our daily lives becoming ever more distant and abstract. However, there are those among us who seem able to draw a line through this complexity, strike a light in darkening times and bring understanding and acceptance to the confusion and fear.

To frame our thoughts and bring the voice of reason to our meeting this November we have invited Mike Daisey & Todd Lester to speak about their role as artistic chameleon and activist, presenting many faces to the world, crossing many boundaries in attempting to forge a vibrant common truth regarding the worth and necessity for creativity. Attempting to unashamedly uses their artistic voice to express their concerns about, and draw attention to, what is happening in the world that they consider urgent and important.

Mike Daisey has been called “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by the New York Times for his groundbreaking monologues, which include last season’s critically acclaimed The Last Cargo Cult, the controversial How Theater Failed America, the six-hour epic Great Men of Genius, the unrepeatable series All Stories Are Fiction, and his latest work, The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs. He has performed in venues on five continents, ranging from Off-Broadway at the Public Theater to remote islands in the South Pacific, from the Sydney Opera House to abandoned theaters in post-Communist Tajikistan. He’s been a guest on the Late Show with David Letterman, as well as a commentator and contributor for WIRED, Vanity Fair, Slate, Salon, NPR and the BBC. His first film, Layover, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival this year, and a feature film of his monologue If You See Something Say Something is currently in post production.  His second book, Rough Magic, a collected anthology of his monologues, will be published in 2011. He has been nominated for the Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama League Awards, and is the recipient of the Bay Area Critics Circle Award, the Sloan Foundation’s Galileo Prize, and a MacDowell Fellowship.

Artistic talk - Untitled Projects: backwards and forwards

Paroles d'artistes : Untitled Projects: passé et futur

Glasgow School of Art - Lecture Theatre

Over the past 10 years Untitled Projects has produced unusual and visually extravagant theatre in Scotland: from site specific performances in a swimming pool and a living room, to the installation of a 60 meter access ramp for a performance at Tramway. For the IETM Plenary Meeting Untitled Projects director Stewart Laing has devised an informal, performative presentation of the work of the company, looking back over a decade of distinctive events and looking forward to a period of more intense development over the coming years.

So you love everything about art: The artists, of course, but creativity itself as well; The stage, what takes place on it, in front of it, behind it... The encounter, the dialogue between performers and the public; what it does to you, how it affects your identity, your community, your nation, your environment, your world. As a matter of fact, you can't imagine living on the planet without it. And you have something to say about it. As a matter of fact, you would debating. You wish to have some creative exchanges about some specific issues. You have a rather important message to communicate. It happens that you have great ideas! Or you just want to scream with joy...or anger! If this is so, this session is definitely for you. Come and speak up, share your positions, listen, talk, whisper, sing or shout! But remember: reserve your place without any delay: cause it's limited to 100 places Dress code: none. But make sure to wear your voice. And your ears.

Music Theatre and how to support the next generation

City Halls

Le théâtre musical : Comment soutenir la nouvelle génération ?

City Halls

Today we see more and more interdisciplinary production. Music theatre production is interdisciplinary by definition and requires the combination of very specific artistic competences and skills. In music theatre, the international dimension is developed somewhat more strongly than in the performing arts in general. Perhaps due to the musical element which is less confined to national or linguistic borders than text based work. Consequently, co-production has become a regular practice in music theatre. Belgium, thanks to the 1993 Performing Arts Decree, recognises music theatre as an art form and has over 27 national companies. So why is Britain so behind in this field? What are the trends across Europe in the field and is the international circuit open enough to young emerging artists in this field and how do we best support them?

This session aims to attract participants who have a good experience of working with Africa, to share knowledge, identify existing projects and discuss interesting and important ways of moving forward. After years of including art and culture in their bilateral and regional funding programmes with the ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific), the EU Directorate for Development last year encouraged arts professionals from ACP and EU to collaboratively produce “The Brussels Declaration”, setting out the sector’s demands for effectively harnessing artistic creation as a vector of human and economic development. In collaboration with Visiting Arts, one of the active European organisations in Africa, we will come together to share information on new ideas, work, exciting artists, partnerships and initiatives that bring crucial, fresh and innovative approaches to collaborative exchange between Europe and Africa.

L'héritage des Capitales Européennes de la Culture - impacts et attentes

City Halls

European City of Culture, a cluster bomb of meanings and intensions, social renewal and cultural aspirations. What does it mean? what does it do? where can we go now? Of all the many European Cities of Culture created down the years, Glasgow can probably be cited as one of the early success stories. We who live here have all reference at one time or another the impact which the 1990 European City of Culture celebrations had on Glasgow. As with many cities, The title becomes the key-stone in the rebuilding of self image - re-imagining and resurrecting of the cities image of itself as a post industrial, creative and cultural powerhouse amongst a national network of urban conglomerations, while enabling it to present a new version of itself to Europe and the world. In Glasgow’s 20th anniversary year of it’s Cultural Capital status, we ask you to join our panel of experts and catalysts, who have been, or who are currently involved in the delicate and monumental task of reshaping the very ‘idea’ of a city and its creative energy. Discover the benefits and pitfalls of attempting such a thing. Explore where we could go from here and if it was all worth it...
