Govanhill Swimming Pool

Excursion : Piscine de Govanhill

Govanhill Swimming Pool

Govanhill Baths is a B listed Victorian Bathhouse located in Govanhill, Scotland's most ethnically diverse area. The closure of the Baths in 2001 was met with a huge outcry from the local community who protested in the streets and occupied the building for six months until removed by Sheriff Officers. The campaign to save the pool continued and evolved from one of resistance to its current position as a charity which is working toward bringing the building into community ownership.

In partnership with NORD the award winning architectural practice, Govanhill Community Baths Trust has developed plans to refurbish the building as a site for performance and creative learning. Our IETM contribution will consist of a tour around the building and a talk by members of the Trust and NORD on the history of the campaign and our current work on community ownership.

Making Mischief in Glasgow. Ian Smith, Artistic Director of Mischief La-Bas, will give a presentation on the growth of the Glasgow-based interactive performance company whose mission statement is ‘to gently warp the underlay of the fabric of society’. Whether crashing a full-sized space rocket into the city centre, erecting statues of an obscure Tango Superstar in 25 Scottish villages, or creating a street-long ‘Market of Optimism’ Smith believes the company provides very real medicine to a society often jaded by cynicism. ’20 years ago, nobody knew they needed Mischief, now we find some people can’t do without it.’

Human Animal is a unique performance installation recently performed at the Shanghai Expo and in Beijing 798 Space. This work, inspired by the award winning performance Enclosure 44 – Humans (2008) is a moving installation which challenges perceptions of “who's watching who”. Human Animal exposes audiences and performers to the intrinsic evolutionary complicity between humans and animals.

In a world of high unemployment, state surveillance and fierce repression, the young get their kicks from random violence. Alex is with his gang of droogs, hyping them up for their nightly orgy of opportunistic brutality. But our charismatic delinquent narrator isn’t a straightforward psychopath. As we follow his rehabilitation by the state we are left wondering if being forced to be good is in fact more evil than sin itself.

It’s Midsummer’s weekend in Edinburgh. It’s raining. Two thirtysomethings are sitting in a New Town bar waiting for something to turn up. He’s a failing car salesman on the fringes of the city’s underworld and she’s a high powered divorce lawyer with a taste for other people’s husbands. She’s out of his league and he’s not her type at all. They absolutely should not sleep together. Ever. Ever.

Midsummer [a play with songs] is the story of Bob and Helena and a great lost weekend of bridge burning, car chases, wedding bust-ups, bondage miscalculations, midnight trysts and horrible hungover self loathing misery. Featuring Cora Bissett and Matthew Pidgeon as the ill-advised love match, Midsummer is a quirky, charming love story by one of Scotland’s leading playwrights, David Greig and top Edinburgh singer/songwriter, Gordon McIntyre of the band ballboy.

Orlando opens with the hero as a young man in Elizabethan England, and follows his transformations of fortune, love and gender in this sensuous epic of self-discovery. Cryptic performances seek to ‘ravish the senses’, fusing performance, live music, visuals and technology, enabling ‘music to be looked at…not just listened to’. “I tied my heart to the oak tree.”
